Live Blogging Thursday: Obama in Durham, NC

I've just arrived on the NCCU campus in Durham where Barack Obama will host a "countdown to change" rally.
The Obama campaign has given me press credentials, the wireless signal isn't great but it's working, so I'm all set to go. I plan on starting at 4.30 pm, Obama is Scheduled to speak at 5 pm.
The event is in the O'Kelly Riddick Stadium in the middle of the NCCU campus because of the overwhelming demand for tickets. Doors opened at 3 pm and I'm guessing there's about 1500 people here right now.

this will be really cool, LiberalNC

Statement on Rev. McClurkin
In case you missed this:
Left on 49
time to walk the walk
I have heard enough words by politicians over the years, I want to see action on his part to regain my support.
"jump in where you can and hang on"
Briscoe Darling to Sheriff Andy
take action?
and what action would you like to see taken?
For starters
He could have avoided having the bigot as the MC of the event.
Just a thought.
"85% of Republicans are Democrats who don't know what's going on." -Robert Kennedy, Jr.
"Man is free at the moment he wishes to be." -Voltaire
She was asking about regaining her trust.
Which to me indicates she wants him to do something now, after the mistake.
It's easy to say you shouldn't have done this or that, but everyone makes mistakes, some are bigger than others. For example i can say Edwards shouldn't have voted for the Iraq war in the past, or shouldn't have gotten a $400 haircut. Hillary shouldn't have voted for the new Iran resolution and also shouldn't have voted to give Bush authority to start the Iraq war.
Mistakes get made, in any campaign, some are bigger than others...
Welcome home.

thanks!
When do we get a train that runs every hour or so between the triangle and Charlotte?
That's one thing I miss about Belgium, sitting in the train surfing the web on the complementary in-train internet, while relaxing with some coffee from the bar in the train and enjoying the scenery that flies by...
Damn commies :-)
I did get 51 mpg in My Prius though, but you still have to stay awake...
Oh, don't get me started...
A rail infrastructure improvement plan for North Carolina!
A Federal Interstate Rail Network!
Build the Washington->Atlanta high speed corridor!
Seriously. One of you candidates out there reading this, I'm telling you this is a winner. It's good for the economy, good for business, and good for the environment.
If someone wants a 2,000 word blog post on this, just give me a little encouragement... ;)
Consider this a little encouragement
I'm fascinated by train travel, even as it exists in NC today. It cost me less to go to DC via train than it would have to drive and took roughly the same amount of time (maybe a little longer). I loved riding the train/subway/busses in Pittsburgh to get around. In one sentence - I love public transportation. I'm interested in knowing how newer trains are fueled, and how they can affect the environment. I also have a theory that communities that rely on public transportation are closer socially than those that don't. I knew every single regular on the bus/subway combo I took to work in Pittsburgh.
So go for it - Dr. Frank. I want to read it.

The other thing he could have done was to apologize
and say he actually made a mistake. It takes courage to say "I was wrong" but it also shows character. Obama made a mistake. I don't think he's anti-LGBT, but this was a major misstep and he refuses to own it.

Thanks for posting this
I'm glad to hear him set himself apart. It may take a more publicly visible statement to cut through, but at least this is the right message.
I'm a bit bummed I couldn't make it over to NCCU today, (I obviously live a lot closer than you) but I just couldn't see getting back from work, with everything else going on this week. Thanks for liveblogging!
It was a nice try at a save,
but I'm not sure that it accomplished what Obama hoped that it would.

thanks!
thanks for taking the time and energy to do this. i can't wait to read your report.

Marching band is playing. Tons of press around, I'm counting 13 cameras.
I'm also taking pictures but won't be able to post those until very late tonight.
See you guys at 4.30 pm!

He's asking everyone to go help the campaign in South Carolina.

people are still pouring in to the stadium
Parking is a nightmare here, so I'm expecting a lot of folks to show up kinda late. Good thing I made my own "BlueNC PRESS" sign to hang in my car. Cops actually fell for it ;-)
Music playing" your love is lifting me higher".
Crowd is starting to shake their behinds a little :-)
A first!
Good thinking ahead.
Is there anyone here?
I'm wondering if anyone is actually reading this...

Press is getting instructions now
Mayor Bell (if I understood that right) will introduce Obama, Speech should be over around 6.15 pm.
Been told we might have an opportunity to interview Obama afterwards, press starts drooling ;-)
Keep that drool off your keyboard.

I was gonna say I had it covered in plastic, but..
that might sound nasty for other reasons.
You're Right
And, according to Under the Dome, the pair (Obama and Bell) are endorsing each other.

Watching Live
I'm watching live video from the local NBC affiliate...I believe it's also available from WRAL and WTVD.
Oh, how I love that marching band ;)

big group of people at the gate waiting to get in
So many people here now it's tough to guess a number.
Crowd seems to me to be about double as big as the Rock Hill, SC event I went to, which had 2000 attendees. So my guess is about 4000 here.
If you do get to interview, what questions
will you be asking?

don't think I'll get a chance
My question would probably be: "euhmm...euhhhhh...how YOU doing?"
connection getting real slow...
or maybe its the site. In any case..sorry folks.
By the way...we're being watched by Secret Service from the top of the stadium roof..looks like a sniper too.
Saw their Black SUVS at the entrance too, has a big sign in the window that says Secret Service. Not very secret if you ask Me :-)
Well, it is Durham
And as everyone knows, this is a place you can scarcely walk out the door without fear of being shot by a drug dealer or arrested by a rogue prosecutor. My god, that they let a Presidential candidate in the city limits!
hundreds of rally signs now being handed out to the audience.
They all say "CHANGE we can believe in"
In case you're local...
I see TV news vans from channel 11, 17, Fox and News 14
WRAL streaming
I stay away from NBC-17 (if it bleeds, it leads news) and WTVD (Disney).
Is the crowd largely NCCU students, or other folks?
The people we can see in the WRAL video look a bit older..
very mixed crowd
good number of students.. guessing the average age around 30.
I'd say about 50% African-American. lot of children too.
went to take a picture from the press photographers stage.
big crowd! I'll try to post pictures late tonight if i have energy left after a 3 hour drive, otherwise tomorrow.
Crowd Looks Impressive
And I love the marching band...jams to the Eagles' rendition of "Good Life" by Kanye

By the way..
We really need those BlueNC business cards.
I know, I know.
Who wants to take it on?
Tell you what. I'll buy BlueNC business cards for up to 20 people if someone else will design them and arrange for someone to print them.
Any takers?
don't you already have a design?
Thought you had some cards at ConvergeSouth...
I do, but it should be improved
It's one of my philosophies . . . whenever you have the chance to do something again, do it better.
Plus mine doesn't have phone numbers, addresses, etc., which should probably be added on a next round.
okay, crowd starts cheering
Looks like Obama's in the house..backstage anyway.
That's as energetic as I've ever seen Bill Bell
Lord, he almost looks dynamic! Shocking!
Mayor on stage now
thanking school administration, students.
Says Obama is reaching more new voters than anyone else.
says Obama is only major candidate who always has been against the war. Endorses Obama.
Obama walks in
crowd goes nuts.
Wow! I just checked out the teevee
Amazing!

talks about big crowds they've seen everywhere.
says the make up of the crowd is inspiring, not just the size of it.
Part of the reason so many people are here
"sick and tired of george W Bush".
We're tired of an administration that treats constitution as a nuisance.
Tax cuts for the rich, bad economic policies.
tired of diferent standards of justice, jena 6 against blackwater or scooter Libby
Tired of lack of progress on healthcare and education and energy.
Most of all tired of war that costs us thousands of lives and trillion of dollars.
need to change way politics are done in Washington
changing parties in the white house isnt enough, need big and fundamental change.
need major change in healthcare and energy policies, can only do that with fundamental change in the way politics are don.
talks about his cousin Dick Cheney, says he's "been hiding this for a long time, everyone has a crazy uncle in the attic and black sheep in the family". Says he 'doesnt want to go on that family hunting trip anytime soon.
Talks about Cheney being in cohorts with Exxon/Mobil.
Obama says he wants to clean the place out and make fundamental change in Washington
people are convinced...
nobody in Washington is listening. Says he's running because he wants the people's voice to be heard in Washington.
Says folks in washington think he's naive, talking about hope again.
Says folks say he hasnt been in washington long enough, says that might boil all the hope out of him.
Some of the people with long resume: cheney and Bush..long resume doesnt guarantee good policies.
(I am told now crowd is 3200 folks big).
says he has plenty of experience..
in standing up against special interests and has experience standing up even when its not popular. references to anti-war speech when he was running for senate, when Bush popularity was 65%.
thinks that is something you need to expect from the next president, someone that is willing to stand up, that doesn't flip-flop (swipe at Hillary?)
Yep.
He's taken a few swipes at Hillary without ever saying her name.

Thanks for the liveblogging! I'll read it all later!
says he wants healthcare for everyone
by the end of his first term.
Wants to invest in early childhood education. takes aim at No child left behind, that "leaves the money behind".
Work with our teachers instead of against them. Get banks out of student loans and make affordable college for everyone.
I gotta run too, Lib.
You're doing an awesome job - and I want to thank you for documenting the Mr. Obama's visit to Durham. It will reside out here on the interTubes forever!
Be safe on the way home.

This is good.
In the past he has said he would not repeal the Bush tax cut to pay for his UHC, but would allow it to lapse. That doesn't happen until the end of the first term, which means no UHC until second term. This is a good change.

It's Not a Change.
He's always said the same thing. From the speech announcing his candidacy:
----
There are people in every time and every land who want to stop history in its tracts. They fear the future, mistrust the present, and invoke the security of the comfortable past which, in fact, never existed. - Robert F. Kennedy
----

He says he'll pay for it with the bush tax cut.
But, he says he will let it expire, not repeal it. It expires at the end of 2011, which means 2012 is the earliest he can begin paying for his program.

Want to increase gas mileage standards to 40 mpg
campaign tells me now that 3400 tickets got sold online and they sold 600 at the gate. Guess my guess of 4000 was correct :-)
You could get a job in crowd estimating!

no contradiction between our security and our moral standing..
in the world. Says first thing he will do after getting elected is calling togehter the jont chiefs of staff to end this world. Says Clintons name now. Blames her for voting for iran resolution, says we shouldnt be beating the war drums twice. Says Clinton is telling him hes naive for wanting to talk to "our enemies".
Says we should never fear to negotiate but shouldnt negotiate out of fear.
:) Hoping this is a typo.
Thanks for doing this, LibNC - it's terrific. Be safe on the way home.

Ack!
That sure was a typo... meant to say "end this WAR" of course.
End this world....great typo
or freudian slip....you see, it appears they are already trying to end the world as we know it, so maybe you meant he'd stop them from ending the world. :)

There's a great video on the News&Observer website, which gives a good impression of the Barack Obama rally in Durham yesterday.
