Marriage News Watch

This week's video looks at the progress of marriage equality around the country, discusses what Governor Perdue's decision could mean in North Carolina for the amendment, and discusses an elderly North Carolinian couple who were willing to get arrested for equality. They got arrested for equality. Will you attend a march?

Another opportunity

Another opportunity to go to an anti-amendment event (hat tip to Orange Politics for alerting me to this event)

http://www.chapelboro.com/Kehillah-Event-Will-Highlight-Opposition-To-Ga...

CHAPEL HILL-Next weekend, Chapel Hill’s Kehillah Synagogue is teaming up with Judea Reform to offer a program encouraging local residents to vote against the proposed statewide gay marriage ban.

The event is free and open to the public, and it will take place February 5 at the Kehillah Synagogue on Mason Farm Road beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone know of any other anti-amendment events or activities coming up in the next few months? If so, please share!

Miller at Pride

There may be other potential allies in the gubernatorial primary field, but I've got to say I like the idea of having an ally who isn't afraid to show publicly that they are an ally.

And according to PPP he's one of the few people to be in the top 5 of possible challengers to Pat, and in the top 5 of favorability among the Democratic Party which could help with the primary.

I don't think Chapel Hill is

I don't think Chapel Hill is the place where the amendment's support comes from...

Good point

Good point, I think you're right about that. Although it doesn't hurt to rally people who can then carry the messages out far and wide.

The Fourth Annual Jack Crum Conference on Prophetic Ministry

All of Us NC is working on anti-amendment workshops in Goldsboro, Elizabeth City, Rocky Mount, Greenville, and New Bern, and maybe Wilmington too (the exact dates/times/locations aren't set for sure yet, but some workshops will definitely be happening).

NCSU's LGBT student group has had couple voter registration drives already and I expect they'll have more.

Honest NC is having the Ides of Love march with people from around the state on March 15th.

All of Us NC and some other groups are marching at HKonJ in solidarity with the coalitions agenda and to raise awareness about fighting back against the amendment.

I feel like every day or two I'm learning about events I didn't know about, so I just wanted to open the question open for anyone who knows of any events I haven't heard of yet, to try to build a more comprehensive list. That Chapel Hill event was just the latest one I heard about.

Jake

I've had several requests for posters I made up way back when. Do you know if anyone is making up new "AGAINST" posters that retailers can put in their windows?

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6yTM18P43oKOTU0NGZmMTQtYmQzMS00ZTRhLWE...

I don't

I made some bumper stickers last year, ordered a batch, and mailed them to anyone who wanted them, but I could only afford so many. I haven't heard of Protect NC Families doing any signs or stickers or anything business related or otherwise.

I had some conversations with Pam Spaulding last year and we both liked the idea of businesses getting into it. But to my knowledge, nothing has manifested in that direction other than what you've done.

I think one that had Vote Against language, and that maybe had a few bullet points on how this can affect straight couples could be strong.

  • Keep North Carolina moving forward
  • Vote against taking away rights
  • Vote against ending domestic violence protections for unmarried couples gay or straight
  • Vote against ending domestic partnerships for couples gay or straight

I don't have the graphic design skills to create such a flyer that looks professional enough that I think a business would put it up, nor do I have a lot of money for printing, but I am connected with a lot of different groups working against this amendment and could distribute flyers to many of them to then further distribute in their communities around the state if someone else designs/prints them. But to my knowledge, no one has done an updated flyer.

Maybe some groups were holding off on a lot of flying until the May date was certain, but with the redistricting map ruling a week or so ago, the date is fairly secure now.

New posters available!

Somebody's gotta do it. Spread the word!

Anyone can print their own posters by clicking the link below.

Awesome!

I'll start sharing this link far and wide!

Anti-amendment phonebanking

Another upcoming event. This just landed in my inbox from the OCDP:

Phone Banking Against Amendment 1
The Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families will be conducting a phone bank at the offices of the Orange County Democratic Party (209 Lloyd Street, Suite 310, Carrboro) in order to identify our supporters, i.e. those who want to defeat Amendment 1. We will be in the office from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday, February 1st. We hope that you will join us in educating NC and defeating Amendment 1.

NCSU Anti-amendment Event w/ Rev. Barber

Just landed in my inbox.

It'll be Tuesday Feb 28th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Parks Shops room 210.

Here's a campus map to make that easier to find. It's south of the Court of North Carolina.
http://www.ncsu.edu/campus_map/north.htm

It'll be a discussion about the amendment and about defeating it. And it says they'll have voter registration on site, and refreshments as well.

If you need more details you can e-mail aepshte@ncsu.edu
