McHenry's "town halls" meet at church
Kid you not. Can't make this stuff up. Two of 'em.
Tonight's town hall at 6:30 for Mitchell County is at the Abundant Life Outreach church. I've been there. Never seen so much audio equipment in my life. And compared to the cramped Newland town hall from last night at least it's got plenty of parking.
From an unconfirmed email I got yesterday:
This church, Abundant Life Outreach, is attended by the First Vice Chair of the Republican Party, and Spruce Pine Mayor, and Republican Campaign Activist - Ralph Hise. His mother, Shirley Hise, also attends this church. She is the Director of the Chamber of Commerce (As a side note the Mitchell Chamber rents the front part of its office building to the McHenry Congressional Field Office). Also belonging to the Abundant Life Outreach Church is Bill Sleagel (sp?) who is the new Chair of the Tenth District Republicans.
So, it's a neutral location on so many fronts.
Another unpublic location for a McHenry town hall is the Catawba edition on Tuesday, August 21, 7 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church 1301 12th Street Drive, NW, Hickory, NC. I know nothing much about the philosophies of either of these churches but do why do we have to go to church to meet our Congressman?

The line between church and state is so blurred
as to be non-existent. Many folks are so clueless that they have no idea how offensive this can be to people of other faiths.
Surely there are community college auditoriums in these counties, with sound equipment that can be used, etc.

Community colleges are a great idea
but it would be even easier to find space at an elementary school. They do have to pay (the custodians wind up working late when the building is rented at night) but the rates are usually quite good.

Churches
We have a lot of polling places that are churches. They serve as good community centers with meeting space and parking.
Maybe, just maybe that was all they could find
for Spruce Pine. Even though Mayland Community College is only a few miles out of town on the main drag. But Hickory? Come on.
And "good" community centers? Depends on your definition of "good."
If he wanted good parking, he wouldn't have held last night's at the Town Hall. If I remember there are 10 or 12 spaces, no parking either up or down the street on that side and a busy street to cross.

Last year
The event was at the Catawba Valley Community College. It worked out great (except for McHenry shouting at constiuents).

I realize that.
But...
never mind.

McHenry is hiding behind God
He figures folks are going to be nice in church. He he....actually Churches do usually have great meeting spaces and better rental rates (many times free) than other locations. In some smaller communities they may be the only buildings with adequate meeting space. That being said.......
Schools also have excellent large meeting spaces and last I checked most schools loan/rent out space....and NEED money, so maybe someone can suggest to McHenry and his staff that they support our schools.

...and
non-churchy people may just be reluctant to go to the event.
It's a great move if it's intended to target a certain crowd and disenfranchise everyone else.
Larry Kissell is MY Congressman
see Blue South's comment above.
Most people who don't support him won't walk into a church and start yelling at him, or even being overly rude. A church does that to you.

Well,
It doesn't do it to me. I don't mind yelling at someone who needs yelling at no matter where they are.
But to assume that meeting in one religion's space is a-okay with everyone else because it's convenient and it has good parking smacks of short-sighted ignorance of the feelings of minority religions.
Let's pretend for a minute that the meeting was to be held at a Mosque that had a marvelous community room and great parking. How do you suppose that would go over?
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
to get a sense of how that question might be answered...
...are there local mosque representatives that might be invited to a mchenry "revival"?

not my district, I can't answer.
but I'm not a christian, and while I'm not intimidated by the meeting place, I find it offensive when there are other non-faith based places available.

please notice
I didnt say that people would be rude to him. I said he was rude to them.
He is going to continue telling constiuents to "sit down and shut up" if they disagree with him no matter where it happens and no matter how nice they are to him. The only reason McHenry wont have a "macaca" moment is because he hates everyone who disagrees with him, regardless of color.

That's why I want recordings of every town hall
even if no one plans to confront him. He can't help but be rude.
