Memorial Day
While you go about your Memorial Day celebrations - you know, the golf, swimming pool, picnic at the park and dinner cooked out on the grill - take a moment or two to do what this day was set aside for. Take a moment to remember those who have died in the service of our country. It's okay if you forget to fly your flag at half staff until noon and then full staff for the remainder of the day. It's okay if you don't decorate with flags the graves of veterans from your family who died in the service of our country.
It isn't okay, however, if this day slips by and you fail to take just one minute to stop and think about the men and women who have died and who are dying every single day in the service of this country.
I know, it's sad to think about the young people who give their lives to serve our country. It's especially sad when we don't agree with the current war in question.
Remember them anyway.
It's hard to think about the lives cut short. All that promise for the future gone. What kind of men and women would they have become?
Today of all days, don't question the validity or necessity of war. Just remember those who acted without question to protect their country - to protect you - and who paid the dearest price.
Edit: .....well....I think there are some with the right to question the validity and necessity of this particular war and I trust they will do so with dignity.

I have my flags and am heading to the cemetery today.
Mom's in the hospital (she's fine, we think...waiting for the doctors to agree with us) so I won't be here the rest of the day. I'm hoping I can get her released in time to observe Decoration Day.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

A Father's Anguish
COL (R) "Skip" Bacevich was a colleague, fellow professor, neighbor and distingushed commander prior to his retirement from the Army.
You may have seen stories about his loss, as he is a conservative and critic of the war and how the president is fighting it. When he and his wife lost their son earlier this month, he received lots of flack for both ends of the political spectrum. This appeared in yeasterday's Washington Post.

Thank you, Fred.
We will find a way to end the occupation.
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
Thank you, SD
We have already had our ceremony today.
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
Every life cut short unnecessarily is a sin
I honor all soldiers that served and are serving. Their committment to their country should never be able to be abused like this. What is happening now in Iraq is a tragedy, pure and simple.
Even more of a sin is for the leader of our country, the man that manipulated us into this fiasco, not honoring them as they should be.
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
