Mexico is no longer the threat....

It's China. It now appears that immigration opponents are no longer focusing their energies on Manuel, Jesus, etc. as the face of immigration. Now the biggest threat according to them are the Chinese. Taking a page out of Duncan Hunter's (or is it Tom Tancredo, I get them confused) playbook, anti-immigration radicals are now putting their focus on foreign students, most notably the Chinese. This fear is not based upon legitimate concerns with immigration, jobloss, etc., rather now they are no longer veiling their racism and xenophobia.

According to their skewed statistics (I wish I had them on hand), these zealots are contending that the Chinese are producing more engineers than America. Usage of this statistic is meant to do nothing more than spread fear. These individuals contend, that for every foreign national seeking education in America, one American should be offered in exchanged. This notion is completely laughable on the surface. China and India due to their massive populations are sending more students to America for higher education than America could send back to China and India. Furthermore, education is not a rare nonrenewable resource. It is something that should be open to everyone and not just us fair skinned Americans. Likewise, this fear mongering is being coupled with the size of the Chinese military. Proponents of this radical cessation in academic immigration contend that China, with its massive military size is training a slew of engineers to take over America.

I do believe in reasonable restrictions to immigration. I do not subscribe to the notion that our academic institutions are being used to train fanatical anti-American warriors as some part of an international plot to destroy America. Until the lunatic fringe, such as FAIR is silenced, this country will never have reasonable immigration reforms.

Fear is right

BushCo has hastened - maybe even precipitated - the fall of the American empire. We are increasingly seen by the rest of the world as militaristic bullies who will stop at nothing to hold on to the trappings of influence and power. Other countries are already turning to China for friendship, commerce, talent, resources and money.

Yes we're still admired by some, but our moral high-ground has been so tattered that it could take generations, at least, to salvage respectability. This is why the next president is so critical.

In any case, all of this explains why Americans are scared out of their pants. We're on the downside of our empire and we want to blame anyone and everyone besides ourselves for allowing a moron to serve as president for eight long years.
