Mr Smith Goes To Raleigh

This is about the only left turn Fred Smith will take for the next year and a half. In front of a crowd of about 60 people on the steps of Raleigh's Borden Building, Fred Smith declared his candidacy for Governor of North Carolina for 2008. The crowd was predominantly white males but included about 15 white females, about a dozen newsmen, three African-American males and a few right-wing bloggers including Lorie Byrd and Dean Stephens.
The setting was part of the former Methodist Orphanage that Smith claims as his background by virtue of his mother being a house matron for 24 boys. Speaking from the white columned porch of the two story brick building with slate roof and dormer windows Smith gave a predictable speech that garnered some polite applause from the generally demure crowd.

He said he wants the campaign to be "a conversation with the people". His right-hand man Jonathan Hill asked me if I wanted to get closer to the podium then waved me off when I said I was with BlueNC. Talking to two women nearby he said we say the most terrible things and use the foulest language. There ended the conversation.
Our ancestors were a tenacious and hard working people who fought to ensure that their principles and values were upheld.
No confirmation yet from Native American or African American supporters on the extent of shared values.
You can read the talking points elsewhere in the MSM. He used the words accessible and affordable healthcare, energy independence, clean water and clean air but offered no explanation as to how his party seems opposed to these things. The immigration issue was one of the few that got a rise from the crowd along with the unnecessary "right to vote" marriage amendment. How ironic that he claims to want government out of our lives. He wants to "empower people not bureaucrats". Don't we all. I'm sure there's an exception in there somewhere for DOT bureaucrats.
Smith said he wants to do three things:
1) Articulate a vision for a plan
2) Build, recruit and motivate teams of people to execute the plan.
3) Assemble resources to carry out the plan.
Sounds like a plan. For what?
In response to a question from Cullen Browder of WRAL about name recognition he brushed it off saying that this is "the first down in a long football game"
In response to questions about commitment to a campaign he said he didn't "want to be called John Edwards". He had a few of the right-wing catch phrases down pat. "The price of freedom is not free". People want "a hand up, not hand-outs".
In response to one question about his claim of humble beginnings being in contrast with his strong business support and how he would relate to poor and moderate income people he pointed to the 7-600 people who work for him. He said they were hard working people who knew he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth and would look out for them. He didn't say anything about the number of his hardworking employees and their spouses who give him 4 digit contributions that he doesn't need.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Fred Smith for Governor:

Fredly Smith, paver of paradise
and torturer of orphans! When our ancestors were asked how proud are they that Mr. Smith was upholding their principals and values, they said, "We don't even know his name."
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
Progressive Discussions
Praise the Lord! Questions please!
His right-hand man Jonathan Hill asked me if I wanted to get closer to the podium then waved me off when I said I was with BlueNC. Talking to two women nearby he said we say the most terrible things and use the foulest language. There ended the conversation.*GF
Jonathan: Okay! Gov to be Smith is ready to take questions after that wonderful god fearing statement.
Jonathan: You there with the Dark CIA Police style Sun glasses?
Man with Shades: Senator Smith is it true that were a Democrat for 30 years and once voted for Harry Truman?
Smith: Not true! I was only 3 years old than. Don't I know you?
Man with Shades: No sir! Never met you in my life. Is it true that you voted for a Democrat in 1994 during the Republican revolution?
Smith: Who are you? And that is silly! I didn't become a republican until Jesse Helmes told me that I was one and didn't know it. I know you! You are Billy Graham that scum bag lawyer pretending to be Republican. Sgt of Arms! Remove that Turkey from the area and if he does not move, break his legs in the name of Jesus tough love.
Smith: Next question!
Sponge Bob Orr: Is it true that you are a crossdresser Republican Democrat and hate Art Pope the savior of our GOP party?
Smith: @@#@##@!^^^*!!SOB loser judge
Young Man: Senator Smith! I am with NC Red a blogging site. Is it true that you think John Edwards is a running back with Carolina Blue?
Smith: Yes and he is the best recruit that Carolina has got this year under Coach Edwards. And by the way, I'm happy to know that you young Republicans are working hard on the internet and blogging the Republican truth. But you do need to stay off those Porn sites that Congressman Foley is promoting.
Young Man: Senator Smith! I am a member of a anti-war movement group that believes Republicans like you are Nazi"s and want to sleep with Gays.
Smith: Questions over! Jonathan! I want to have a chat with you about fubaring this meeting.

Sarcasm much?
I'm cracking up here.
I think this is probably my favorite among your posts. Excellent post.
I dropped over to the Dark Side and read some of Freds ravings
about defending family values. Another political platform from the pulpit of bigotry. He's a military man too...JAG/law school for four years in some backwater post...while others were in a distant place picking leeches off their bodies. I'm sure he was chomping at the bit to go...darn, what aa disappointment for him.
SE NC Dems
You are a brave man
and you're probably right. I'm sure he's deeply disappointed he remained leech-free.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
Hmph...
"In response to a question from Cullen Browder of WRAL about name recognition he brushed it off saying that this is "the first down in a long football game"
You brushed off Cullen Browder of WRAL? I don't even watch TV and I know who HE is. Are you an (insert word choice here)?
Did he really do that in front of people - don't forget that WRAL. And football? That's game. (Honest - it is) Representing me is so much more important than football. Eh, well. Maybe it was his audience.
"In response to questions about commitment to a campaign he said he didn't "want to be called John Edwards".
You'd be lucky if they compared you to John Edwards. He has integrity. What have you got, Fred? I live right by you and I bet you wouldn't speak to me because I don't "dress right". I can dress up. I choose not to - you limit yourself, sir.
Pfffftttt..... About as exciting as his billboards. Where's the beef?
The Royal We
Laura Leslie of WUNC caught this at Isaac Hunter's Tavern reporter's blog:
I heard it too and made notes about it but I dropped it from the post as I thought maybe I had misheard and, it sounded absurd. She obviously recorded it and, yes, it is absurd.
hack, hack....
I choked on my smoke. Give a warning next time. ;)
