My first BlueNC blogpost -- GSO/Guilford County blogging

Here's my first post. I've been lurking for a year or so, and I hope to post regularly on Greensboro politicking, local issues, and the 08 races.

I'm an Edwards backer, but I'm also interested in what's coming out of the woodwork for the 08 Senate race.

And maybe you guys can help me understand the General Assembly.

Welcome and congrats on your first post

It will be great to hear about G'boro happenings and goings on. Glad you came out of lurk mode.

Or just ask away. I'll be in the back row nodding my head as though I already know all this stuff.

We have some things in

We have some things in common, Gsodem. I live in the Triad, have been lurking for a while, and I'm an Edwards backer, too.

Are you, or any others who see this, for that matter, disappointed with the health plan he released this week? I was a bit shocked, as he has come out so boldly on the war, poverty, and practically everything else; I found his healthcare plan to be pretty lightweight in comparison.

Even Republicans I know (and there are tons of them here in E Forsyth Co), think that something drastic should happen with healthcare---they just have different solutions.

War is over if you want it.

Welcome Internazionale

Glad you've de-lurked as well.

thanks

I've been looking for the right forum, and you guys rock.

My primary interest has always been on national and international affairs, but I'm eager to learn about state affairs as well. Looks like this is the proper salon of philosophers for such. . .

Thanks, and welcome

I've always been focused on national and international myself, but I guess I began to feel like a bystander, or maybe just flat out irrelevant. In any case, when BlueNC came along it seemed like we could actually put a dent in business as usual and start to shape the agenda. That's the hope, anyway.

Glad you're here . . . good to see the lurkers leaping!

A little more for you,

A little more for you, gsodem. Seeing as how there isn't a dime's worth of difference between Edwards and Obama on the issues, do you think that if Sen Barack comes out with a bolder healthcare plan than Edwards, there will be defections?

War is over if you want it.

Gaming Edwards/Obama

I've been metagaming the top tier for a while now, just as much as the next guy (or gal) really.

And here's what I've come up with: Obama is a fairly unknown quantity. I think he's an amazing speaker, and he recently endorsed healthcare for all, but other than that, what do you know about him?

Obama 07 reminds me a lot of Edwards 03. I didn't know a whole lot about Edwards' policy priorities back then. (To be fair, I didn't know a whole lot about policy or politics back then either, so he may have had more to say that I didn't pick up on.) Edwards 03 was all about "Two Americas" and the promise of social mobility ... not that different from "The Audacity of Hope" don't you think?

Nowadays, Edwards has some amazingly articulate policy proposals.

Whenever Obama gets more specific on his policy and politics, there could be defections, but this far out from Iowa, who knows what's going to happen? Those Iowa caucusgoers are notoriously fickle, and with this many contenders, there's no telling how someone in the middle or third tear could split the vote one way or the other.

PS: An editorial: It seems that the Biden and Dodd candidacies in particular are banking on someone else splitting the vote and Biden/Dodd winning with a plurality of 9%. But that's just snark.

Obama, Edwards

Nice call on Biden and Dodd. I find Biden,in particular, to be clean and articluate, not to mention good looking. Am I jumping the snark?

If you look at their actual records (nice subsitute, in Obama's case, particularly, for campaign rhetoric), they are almost identical. The only difference, at all, really, is on Iraq. Edwards was wrong on Iraq, but had the guts to admit he was wrong; Obama was right, but he was out there in that hotbed of foreign policy, the Illinois State Senate. So I'd even call their supposed difference a draw.

The campaign, I'm sure you'll agree, will be about voting records coupled with who has the best vision for the country. Like you, I'm so impressed with how far Edwards has come in four years. But Obama is way ahead of the game and not just some rookie Senator---he's been in public life (at the state and national stage)for the same amount of time as Edwards has, and on the job actually 3 years longer (although I love what Edwards has been doing out of office almost more than in office!).

GSOdem

Welcome! That first post is always a big one. I remember when I started blogging at a writer's blog about five years ago, my heart was beating out of my chest when I posted my first entry (which was part of a short story).

Congratulations on stepping out!

Welcome to both GSOdem and

Internazionale (woo, that's a mouthfull!, mind if I shorten when responding to In or Inter or whatever you could suggest?) This is indeed the best place to participate in NC politics. There are some amazingly smart people here and they are all willing to teach and answer questions. Thanks for de-lurking, hope more join in. Good first post In...just a small suggestion tho, stick around after posting and be ready to answer questions. :)

Edwards Health Plan

Does anyone know who was consulting with Edwards in developing this plan?

I like that he seems to be trying to propose that has a chance to be adopted. And I believe if the public and small/medium/large business owners would relax and see side by side what is possible versus what we are currently doing, they will run -race- head for Single Payer.

Edwards Health Plan

Wish I knew. . .I think that he is trying to propose something that won't prevent him from getting elected. He doesn't want to get Hillaried by the rightwingers in the GOP or his own party.

Like you, I think if folks saw the current system vs single payer, everybody except the health insurance industry would run head-long for it.

As Edwards says, healthcare costs have gone up 90% in the last five years. Name something else (maybe CEO pay) that's gone up that much in even twice the length of time. . .

I'd rather see a bold plan to match his other stands on the issues---do a real cost analysis on simply removing the insurance industry profits and running everything thru the government. I'll bet folks would have a net less out of pocket costs---higher taxes, but NO healthcare bills. No prescriptions, no copays, no deductibles, nothing.

To sell to the GOP, you cloak it in the interests of small business. Health costs are already prohibitive for most entrepreneurs themselves, much less forcing them to pay for their employees.

Basically, the Edwards plan is a way to bring the 47 million outside our bad system into it. There's nothing there to fundamentally change the system fo the better.

hey GSO is cool

Went to HS there myself and loved reading the Rhino to see what crazy crap the right can come up with.

Welcome to the Blue.

And Inter, welcome as well. I share your sentiments about Edwards' healthcare plan. Not much more there than incremential movements. However we'll see what can be done in 08.
