NC-05: Foxx Bans Reporters From Debate

I bumped this because it seems like just the kind of negative press Virginia Foxx deserves ONE week before the election. Write an LTE if you live in the area. Get this on the front pages. "What is Virginia Foxx hiding?" - RP
Meet Roger Sharpe
meet_roger_sharpe

In a move that can only be classified as classic ass-hattery, Virginia Foxx is REFUSING to debate Democratic opponent Roger Sharpe unless reporters are BANNED from the taping.

Please recommend at dKos and MyDD. Thanks!

Foxx has again and again avoided Roger Sharpe at every turn. She has canceled radio appearances and every SINGLE invitation to debate except this one. And she agreed to this debate with a whole passel of strings attached.

Hit the flip and be amazed at what else is involved...

Jim Longworth, the debate moderator, said yesterday that the congresswoman would not agree to the debate if reporters were there. The full debate is scheduled to be broadcast Nov. 5, two days before the general elections.

Foxx has demanded that the debate NOT be live, but taped tomorrow. Plus, the tape can only be broadcast at 10:30 at NIGHT the Sunday before the election when no one is watching. PLUS, it can only be broadcast from a TV station that is outside of the district and whose signal is unavailable an estimated 90% of the district. I am amazed she has demanded it only be aired with a Manchu voice over dub.

Her request to keep reporters out of the studio is an about-face in campaign strategy from how she ran for Congress two years ago. Foxx, in her first run for Congress, appeared on the program twice: in August 2004 against Vernon Robinson to run for the title of Republican 5th District nominee, and a month later as the GOP nominee against Democrat Jim Harrell.

We are in the home stretch and today is $20 Tuesday, please donate to Roger. Let me tell ya, every penny counts in this last week of backstabbing by Virginia Foxx.

UPDATE: The Winston-Salem Journal has updated their coverage of this craziness.

This election season, as Foxx finishes her first term as a congresswoman, she has shunned sharing the stage with Sharpe. They appeared together once this month at a senior center in Mocksville, but Foxx has stayed away from making joint public appearances that could be extended by regional coverage.

Foxx turned down a debate with Sharpe at Wake Forest University on public radio station 88.5 WFDD. Sharpe was given the whole time slot; his taping will be broadcast this week. Foxx also has turned down at least five invitations to appear with Sharpe in other public forums, according to Sharpe's aides.

Looks like Foxx is into "cut and run"

Clear Choice

There’s nothing ‘insensitive’ about Virginia Foxx

October 30, 2006

By Dwight Sparks - The political wars are fully engaged with the election only two weeks away. I’ve been amused at the off-base attacks on Congresswoman Virginia Foxx. Her Democratic critics have called her out of touch and insensitive.

More accurately, she must be the most visible, accessible member of Congress ever to serve this area. She has spent weekends and time when Congress is at recess crisscrossing the district, turning up at public events large and very small. She has the energy of a kindergarten student. Anyone in the 5th district who hasn’t seen her in the past two years must be living under a rock.

Critics have called her insensitive because she was one of a handful of Congressmen to vote against the billions of dollars of relief for Katrina flood and hurricane victims. She said the hastily-crafted package didn’t include the proper safeguards against waste and abuse. She proved prophetic. Many subsequent stories have chronicled how federal dollars were spent not on helping the hurricane victims, but for luxury items and wasteful purposes.

It would have been easier for her to join the crowd and blindly vote to open the federal money spigots. Instead, she asked for controls to make sure the money didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Now, auditors are trying to chase down that wasted money. She showed courage, not a lack of sensitivity.

There is nothing insensitive about a member of Congress who has put her staff to work securing service medals for veterans who didn’t get them during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Mrs. Foxx has often presented those medals in her Clemmons office to grateful and aging members of this district. Our World War II generation is quickly dying away. Awarding the proper medals to those brave men needs to be done quickly.
Honoring veterans and our active military has been an important part of her first term in office. Rare for a freshman House member, Rep. Foxx won approval for a bill she sponsored allowing servicemen to invest in retirement accounts. President Bush signed the bill into law. By any measure, she has had a very productive, very busy first term. She deserves another.

She has ruffled some feathers. She established her district offices in Boone and Clemmons. Previous 5th district Congressmen maintained an office in Winston-Salem, but the city no longer dominates the district. The Clemmons office recognized the new voting strength of the suburbs and the fast-growing rural counties of Davie and Yadkin.

Her Democratic opponent, Roger Sharpe, is a nice man with a good reputation, but he has not made a convincing case for replacing the incumbent.
Two years ago, Virginia Foxx survived a brutal Republican primary with some of the party’s biggest stars. Voters thought she was the best of the bunch. Her performance in office hasn’t disappointed them. She has made close friends among the House Republican circles and spread her influence. She closely toes the party line.

Some criticize her for that. They seem to prefer an isolated House member with no respect among her peers. Virginia Foxx didn’t go to Washington and forget who sent her. She didn’t get inside the House chambers and change her way of thinking. She is the same woman we sent two years ago — a conservative mountain girl not afraid to make her voice heard in high places. http://www.virginiafoxx.com/

Whatever

With a name like "Truth" you're sure having a hard time keeping your issues straight. I can't speak for anyone else, but your crap about "insensitivity" is a red herring that no one cares about besides you. Foxx may be the most "sensitive" woman on the planet, for all I know, but her voting record is a down-the-line rubber-stamping abrogation of Congressional responsibility. This "sensitive" person is a Bush enabler, pure and simple, which makes her part of a very big problem.

If you think this country is in a better place because of Virginia Foxx's support for George Bush, well, all I can say is you need another screen name: Fool would be more appropriate than Truth.

Guess I was wrong

It seemed to me like all her votes and public appearances were racist, anti-environmental, and cowardly. Maybe she is such a blinding visionary that i didnt recognize her genius and was wrong all those times ive called her a fuckin bitch because of her anti-environmental pantywaste GOP pandering. And shes a fuckin coward that is afraid to answer questions or respond to her constituents (and Im a white male...i cant imagine what its like for a racial minority or woman)

Roger Sharpe has been here several times, and taken all our questions, and given honest, clear answers. Hes got a theological degree fro Union Seminary.

Virginia Foxx goes to church on TV and acts like a christian. She can kiss my ass.

Stormbear...

...The Statesville Record & Landmark is featuring both candidate's views on a variety of issues all this week, having started with the Iraq war on Sunday. Don't know if they will officially endorse a candidate, but they are doing a good job of covering this race, and Sharpe, of course, outshines Foxx everyday. BTW, is Jim Longworth the debate moderator the same as Jim Longworth the newsletter contributor for Vermin Robinson? Just wondering. Thanks for the heads up on the debate escape.
Oh, good one Anglico!

Uhhuh. Courage. Was that the same courage she displayed when she voted against the Voting Rights Act?
Everyone say it with me now, "Pattern of behavior".

HelpLarry.com

"Keep the Faith"

I voted against her today

and it felt SOOOOOO good.

Dem for truth must be from New York (like Foxx) cause he obviously isnt paying attention.

That fuckin bitch is a racist anti-envionemtnal shoplifting adulterous pirate hooker. Shes also a coward. And we all knonw it, so you best move on.

Oooooh...i needed to see some Foxx support somewhere (cause theres none here in Watauga County) to fire me up to spend halloween night making voter calls. Thanks buddy!

Do you kiss your momma with that mouth

Wow! I can see now what a lovely ambassador for progress jwrandolph might be. He seems to have no more ability to express himself than through the international language of the uneducated, profanity. No wonder you’re a Roger Sharpe fan, its amazing to me how similar to Hitler’s "Big Lie" theory this particular man has come. Say something as outlandish and exaggerated as possible, and people will think it’s so crazy it has to be true. Or, ... they might just think your a nut job. Keep up the good work, make sure to use that line when making calls, you'll make the case for Foxx. Of course you won’t use that line, because you might loose votes doing that, so you’ll lie and by the end of your 5 minute script you’ll be a Boyscout helping little old ladies across the street. Keep up the good lies, grab your bong and the old porno mag on your coffee table, and think up some new words.

I love it when Bushbots get all bothered about profanity.

And I always have the same response:

You know what's really obscene, Truth? What's REALLY obscene is how the reactionaries on the right are destroying this country. What's really obscene is how casually you and the criminals in the Republican party have decimated our integrity and moral standing throughout the world.

What's really obscene is thousands of innocent people losing their limbs and their lives in Iraq for a goddamned lie.

So whine all you want about a little swearing. Pretend you're an adult with strong morals while you sit at your keyboard, supporting an illegal war half way around the world.

And then go enlist in the Army. Because as long as you're here instead of on the ground in Iraq, you're just another chickenshit Republican coward.

Truth was sent here

to piss everyone off and elicit strong, emotional responses. Unfortunately, in some ways he/she has succeeded.

This is an obvious act of desperation by the Foxx campaign and nothing more.

While I feel as passionate about this race as the other bloggers, stooping to na-na-nee-boo-boo tactics is exactly what they want, and I ain't going there.

Truth, if your candidate really wanted to engage in dialogue with the voters and debate the issues, she had many opportunities to do so. Instead, she sends you in here to try and take us off our game.

It isn't going to work my friend.

So you go ahead and add blogs to your list of faux-reasons that Foxx is going to lose. But it ain't us, it ain't the Winston-Salem Journal, it ain't the liberal media, it ain't the "evil" Democracts. It's the fact that Foxx's voting record does not represent the wishes of her constituents. That's it. No need to curse, since that offends you so much. It's pretty simple.

And am I the only one who thinks so? Let's ask the Christmas tree growers in Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga. Let's ask the editorial pages of the Yadkin Ripple and the Elkin Tribune and the Winston-Salem Journal. Let's ask the dozens of Republicans I have personally spoken with who have already voted or plan to vote for Roger Sharpe.

You want to debate policy, Truth, you came to the right place. I'll go toe to toe on that all day long. Too bad your candidate refuses to do so.

What was the title of this article

Last i saw the forum started out complaining because FOXX was debating, did i miss something? How lovely it is to assume that because i disagree i am on the foxx wagon. I just enjoy good dialouge, and i appreciate it coming from someone that can use more than just four letter rants. Not that it offends me, but no one ever got their point across cursing someone. Any normal person would write off jwrandolph within three seconds of hearing that line of garbage. I admit that Sharpe has a good LTE campaign, and even this website, advocates it. Its just sad that some newspapers, "don't have room to print all the letters that they are sent" At least that's what i got back from the WSJ after my 6th submission. It seems like most folks in here took something straight from the John Kerry handbook. If you want to talk Christmas Tree Farmers and Illegal immigration, im sure we can start another forum. For now, enjoy the debate.

Actually

the thread was about Foxx refusing to debate. You brought up articles about other issues.

I got today's Journal, and there were two pro-Foxx LTTEs, including one from the Foxx campaign manager, so somebody is getting through.

Again, if you want to debate me on the issues, let's go. You can throw out John Kerry, or immigration, or whatever other point you want to make, that's fine.

But we don't need another forum. We have a forum. Right here.

We can do it in this thread, or you can start a new thread.

I'll be waiting...staying the course, in your parlance.
