NC Family Policy Council Voter Guide
Our friends at the NC Family Policy Council send out questionnaires to all the candidates about issues ranging from school vouchers to gay rights (but they don't call it that). I thought it would be interesting to see how some of the home team responded. A few surprises, and maybe a vote of two I would change if I were voting today instead of last week. No responses from the (smart) Democratic Guv & Lt. Guv candidates.

6th Cong District
I don't live in the 6th Congressional District, but the answers there seemed the most divergent.
That's the thing
the two people running against Ovittore, literally crawled out of the woodworks this cycle.
Are these the same woodworks that Ovittore left two years ago?
If he's the established Democratic candidate for the 6th district, you guys are in trouble.
He's established in a sense
He's established in a sense that he sits on the Human Relations and Fair Housing committees, but he is certainly not an establishment candidate.
The trouble in the 6th doesn't come from Jay, teepack
It comes from 24 years of being misrepresented by Howard Coble. Howard Coble, who signed a Contract On America, excuse me, Contract with America, which contained a pledge to voluntarily limit himself to being a "citizen legislator." 24 years down the road, Old Howard has made a pretty good career out of being a citizen legislator! Oh, he'll tell you that that part of the Contract on America, excuse me, with America didn't pass, because of various constitutional concerns. But I say, and so do a whole lot of my fellow 6th districters, if Coble felt strongly enough about this Contract on, er with, that's right WITH America, so strong that he willingly signed it, he should go a head and voluntarily limit his terms.
Retire, Howard. It's way past time, man. Way past time. Yes, we know, just recently, you brought the Growler plant to Robbins, in Moore County. That created jobs out of Bush's misbegotten war. Oddly, though, the Growler equipment doesn't fit on the planes that are required to transport them overseas....what's that? It wasn't in the Contract? Oh. Maybe you missed the specs or something. Maybe you didn't think it was important to check - you thought it was ok to leave it to the free market. Whoops. Guess you were wrong. Goddamn. What are we going to do with all this military equipment in Robbins that the military can't use? What's that, Howard? You know someone in Moycock who could take them off our hands? Um....no thanks. Howard. I bet those old boys up in Robbins can find something better to do with them.
Now - as for Jay Ovitorre, Teresa Sue Bratton, MD, and Johnny Carter, all three of them had the courage to put themselves out there and run in a district that stretches from urban to rural, from a blue to red, and has been in the bloody hands of the Republicans for 24 years. It's not something I'd have the guts to do.
I don't agree with any of them on everything. But I do give all three of them credit for caring enough to show up. Unlike the Candidates for US Senate, these three candidates had the guts to face off against each other in three meetings actually resembling debates.
Now, teepack, I don't know what your issue is with Jay Ovitorre, but posting ad hominem crap like that with nothing to show for yourself and hiding behind a stupid name like "teepack" instead of owning up to who you are is a pretty cowardly way of expressing yourself. I'm not fond of that at all.
Since I live in the district, let me tell you who I'm supporting, and why.
That's right, Teresa Sue Bratton, MD, said she's not for universal single payer health care "at this time", and proceeded to give a list of excuses that amounted to basically the insurance industry is big, and we can't beat them. At the same debate, she also said that she was for collective bargaining because she wanted doctors to be able to unionize so that they could get better deals from insurance companies. It sounds to me like she's afraid of insurance companies! Afraid of insurance companies and and their lobbyists. I can't support someone who is afraid of the insurance companies and their "warchest". I think she wants to take a wait and see attitude.
This past Sunday's The Pilot, our local newspaper, informed us that she was willing to leave the decision making on telecomm immunity up to the Democratic Leaders like Nancy Pelosi.
I'm not comfortable with her readiness to be a congresswoman. She seems very nice; I think she'd be a terrific precinct chair. She does not have as strong of a grasp of the issues as I would prefer for a congresswoman.
Johnny Carter seems like a decent man, but he's too far to the right than I can be comfortable supporting, especially in the primary. He is obviously a man of great faith who feels that his faith must be shared in the political forum. I disagree with that on principle - not with his faith or his right to it, but in the manner he wishes to share it.
Jay Ovitorre is not just what's left over, though. To me, he has always been the best choice. I've found him articulate, better informed that both of his primary opponents, and quite simply the closest to my views. There are a few things we don't see eye to eye on, but that's always going to be the way for me. And it's ok.
Jay is my choice for District 6, and I'm glad to have him running. He has the most political experience, even though he's the youngest in the race. I think he has the ability to "be ready on day 1", as the saying goes. He will add to Washington a dose of good old fashioned hard work ethic, a lot of energy, and just enough Jersey to make me happy in my new Carolina home. :)

IMO 'us guys' in the 6th are lucky
to finally have 3 Democrats of varying progressive positions running against Howard Coble AT ALL.
As a county chair I can't endorse one over the others, but Linda's review of their positions from debate is certainly one way to rank them which is supported by what they've said in public. (Thanks for the video from my Asheboro debate, BTW!)
Any one of the 3 candidates would represent our district better in DC than Howard, who is currently just running on pure inertia.
BTW, these candidates and any others are invited to Asheboro tomorrow if they want to speak to the crowd at President Clinton's speech. Just sayin'.
More Video
There's more video of the Asheboro debate, and others, here. The videos were taken and uploaded by Jay Ovittore's campaign, but I've watched them all, and I think they're fairly even handed in how the candidates are presented.

Pretty accurate depiction of the candidates
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
Progressive Discussions
Considering these
Policy papers published by these nutcakes, I wouldn't have responded to their questionnaire either.
SC that's what I was coming here to post
When I saw our district highlighted. I think I was going to be more politically correct and call them nutbags, however.

Overby's responses on a couple of the issues were very interesting.
