NC GOP: Mixing business with pleasure
The pleasure part being the collection of campaign contributions:
The budget timing raises questions about decreased opportunities for public input and the possibility of legislators mixing fundraising with decision-making. Brubaker downplayed the significance of the change because the budget basics are already set.
Okay, the reporter's first mistake was asking Harold Brubaker's opinion about campaign contributions. I hesitate to step into the miasma of the Pope/Morgan feud, but campaign money isn't one of Brubaker's strong suits:
S&M contributed $100,000 to a nonprofit political group Morgan formed that promotes his leadership and disparages his opponents. That contribution is nearly two-thirds of the $160,200 the N.C. Republican Main Street Committee raised between April 1 and June 30, according to its quarterly financial report filed Thursday.
Rep. Danny McComas and former Speaker Harold Brubaker, who both also said they didn’t know about S&M’s contribution, formed the Main Street committee in March with Morgan.
Okay, either Brubaker was lying through his teeth about being unaware of a $100,000 contribution to this PAC, or he's the absolute last person in the Capitol building (including the janitorial staff) who should be crafting a budget for the entire state.
Think about it.

You know, I was just thinking...
Wasn't Brubaker deeply involved in the last Budget thingie? Hell, we might just have a few billion sitting around going unnoticed! :O
And before any of you policy wonks decide to ruin my joke, yes, I'm aware there are dozens of staffers and other legislators counting our beans.
