Van won the last election by the smallest of margins with LaRoque winning Lenoir County. Van won due to the vote in Greene County. LaRoque has been running ever since and has gained national attention on the nonpartisan voting issue. He is a local hero for organizing the court action against forced annexation. Forced annexation is a particularly hot issue when people are losing their jobs, property taxes are rising, and then along comes the city to add to your financial burden.
If I were a betting man I would say that LaRoque will win District 10. Van loses Obama's coattails and LaRoque picks up the moderate vote and the tea baggers. There are many tea baggers in the 10th district and the 10th district is one of the poorest in the state.
And look at the deplorable state of the local Democratic Party. Supporting a recycled Republican running as an unaffilated over a long standing true blue Democratic in the last mayoral election was, for many, the last straw. The local Democratic Party handed the mayor's office to a Replubican for the first time since reconstruction. I can't see the local Democrats helping Van. If anything, he needs to distance himself from their "help."
LaRoque will be the populist candidate and Van will have to run amid the corruption scandal. And don't forget that the 'little Governor,' Ruffin Poole, is a native of Kinston.
The stars have aligned against Van.
It does not look good for Van. I cannot see any one issue where Van has the advantage.

He Basically ran a campaign against the City of Kinston All American City proposal which we Won By the Way.
Plus he has been seen as only looking out for himself with the Non Partisan Referendum. This coming from the Most Partisan Man in the County. Most people were against the Forced Annexation including Van.

Sure were a bunch of empty chairs at that Lenoir County "meet and greet" meeting with Van and Elaine (not sure who else was there). Maybe all the folks were sitting where the cameraman was, sure hope so.
We should be packing them in right now. I think we have lost our focus and energy along the way somehow and it is imperative that we get that going again or we will be licking our wounds big time in the Fall in NC. What we really need is a big issue we all can rally around to put some excitement back in our party. I hate to read posts like the one above by Reasonably Honest because it is more of a "woe is me", "guess we better just give up on this one" than anything and not make the effort because it will be a tough one.

Would have liked for more people to come. You had to be there. We were upstairs and there was Tons of things going on downstairs. I spoke to one guy at the that came in late and was confused with all the activity going on downstairs and didn't know we were upstairs. I'm sure he wasn't the only one. The main thing with any Party is to Grow Membership and Raise Money. We are working on ways to do both. We are still getting over the Bumps and Bruises from the Mayoral Campaign but when gets down to it I think the Party will rebound Better than it was before. God willing!
