NC Sen: We’re not uninformed, Senator.

(Cross-posted from Daily Kos)

So as part of Senator Burr's whitewashing of his record, his latest remark in the Asheville Citizen Times takes it to a new level, you could even call it a bald faced lie. A recent letter to the editor slammed Senator Burr for blocking unemployment benefits, and this week Senator Burr responded by calling the writer ‘uninformed’ about his stance on the issue:

SENATOR BURR, Asheville Citizen Times Letter to the Editor: "He is uninformed as to my support for extending unemployment benefits…I think everyone agrees that we should extend unemployment benefits.”

Senator Burr wants us to think he’s supported the unemployment extension all along, but like most statements of his, again nothing could be farther from the truth.

Burr in his own words on how he really feels about extending unemployment benefits:

Now that Senator Burr is back in North Carolina on his vacation, he wants us to think that he’s spent the last 16 years in Congress ‘Working for NC’ as his campaign bills it.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

“If we intend to have some immediate impact on the economy through what we’re doing, why would we be extending unemployment insurance for a year?’” [Senator Richard Burr in CQ Today, 2/24/10]

May 2010: “Burr said he would prefer extending unemployment benefits just 30 or 60 days and said extending them the rest of the year might dissuade people from looking look for work, ‘Do we send the wrong signal?’ he said.” [Senator Richard Burr quoted in Gannett News Service, 5/10/10]

And just last month he was quoted in the Politico as saying that unemployment was, “no longer an emergency,” Senator Burr defending his vote against extending unemployment benefits. [Senator Burr in Politico, 7/21/10]

Help me send my out of touch Senator Richard Burr into retirement and replace him with progressive champion Elaine Marshall! Unlike Burr, Elaine’s actually delivered for everyday North Carolinians. She’s taken on the big Wall Street banks and fought insurers to extend healthcare access to our rural communities.

Thanks for the cross post

We're blazing with Burr today ... thanks for taking time to cross-post this.

Folks, please recommend this diary at Kos ... we need to nationalize this race, and Kos is the place to make that happen.

Just think of all the jobs Burr would create

making unemployed people go to interviews all day long every day. Those interviews don't conduct themselves you know. And think of the manhours involved in narrowing down 3,000 applicants for one job slot. That's job creation there, you betcha.

Progressives are the true conservatives.

Job creation

Great comment.

The truth is, there's only one part of job creation Burr has been focused on for 16 years ... his own job creation.

I'm still waiting for someone, anyone, to name a single important thing that he has actually accomplished. In fact ...

Let's have a contest inviting commenters to find a piece of significant legislation where Burr has been the out-front leader. The person with the most compelling case showing how the Senator has truly made a difference wins $100. We'll do a BlueNC community poll to determine the winner.

Spread the word.

Senator burr

I would be less ashamed of Senator burr if he voted against extending benefits and then came back to NC and defended his vote. Unfortunately for the people of NC, we have a senator that is not only callous but cowardly.

Fritz Pardue

That is the main point

well one of them anyway ... incompetence and laziness laced with the acrid stench of hypocrisy
