NC Town "Celebrates" Independence Day with Racism

After the national embarrassment of the abortion near-ban passing the NC Senate during Independence Day weekend, The Old Backward State adds more national embarrassment with offensive, racist displays in Hope Mills, NC.

"Parade had racial overtones; lots of Confederate flags, Obama bashing sticker on a tractor, and a John Deere tractor [pulling a trailer full of watermelons] had a poster that reads "WHITE HISTORY MONTH HUG WTE PPL." Certainly, a celebration of independence parade is not the place to bring up these issues. Hope Mills should do better," wrote Michael Kenneth.

Sadly, though, quite a few people, apparently including some town officials, didn't really see much, if anything wrong.

"I know where they're coming from, and I know some of them were hurt by it, and it's just something that happened, and I'm sorry it happened," [Town Commissioner] Edwards said. Edwards, [Town Commissioner] Legge and [Mayor] Warner said they do not think Spell intended to be malicious, just to express his views. They said he has done many good things for the town of Hope Mills.

End note: There are two people named Donnie Spell (one is "Jr.") registered to vote in Cumberland County. Both are Republicans.

Didn't intend to be malicious

Just intended to be an arrogant white asshole.

he succeeded.

And Hope Mills town officials appear to be unsure whether or not they ought to make any changes in the rules for future parades.
