NCDP chair picks

So, if David Parker were to step down I imagine the 1st VC would take over in the short term.

How soon would there be a SEC meeting to replace him?

Who should replace him? I would like to see Joe Hackney take the helm.

Hackney or Linda Garrou

The Plan of Organization

The Plan of Organization requires an election by the SEC within 60 days of the vacancy. The next SEC meeting is the State Convention, which is soon. There is some talk of appointment of an interim person in the position, but I don't see how that would take place under the POO, especially given the tendency of certain Democrats to focus on procedural minutae to the detriment of all else.

We lost a bunch of legislators

Would love to see one of them take over - Garrou or Hackney would be good. I'd also love to see Grier Martin or maybe even Hugh Holliman.

Statement from Parker

He's refusing to resign, saying he has done nothing wrong. Wants a referendum at SEC in June.

Shameful and shocking. Hopefully he'll find his etch-a-sketch soon...

I would like a person to become chair from the Party side

of things. I do not want a former political office holder to become chair (unless ... - see below). They may be good people, but do they really know how a state level political party operates? I would like to see someone who can hit the ground running and not spend a month or two becoming aquainted with the POO and how it informs the political process for NC democrats.
If a former office holder can be found who is also knowledgeable about the workings of the NCDP, then that person might be ideal, but I do not know any if the above mentioned politicians are so qualified.

1st Vice Chair does not

1st Vice Chair does not become interim Chair. Only responsibilty is to call election and preside over it.

I want to see

I want to see the chair of the NC Democratic Party remain committed to equality, regardless of who is in that position, without taking a step backwards.

I'm not a Party officer

Hell, I can't even organize the condiments in the door of my fridge without unnecessary problems, like new pickles getting into trouble by hanging out with old pickles, and the mustard trying to commit suicide by slipping under the safety bar and jumping off.

That said, I think Joe Hackney would be a great Party Chair. He's intelligent, trustworthy, a consensus-builder, and he has an uncanny ability to recognize the worst parts of a bad bill and the best parts of a good one. But even more important, he's the kind of Democrat that should be emulated. He has a vision of the way things should be, and I would choose that over political savvyness any day of the week.

bless you, scharrison

for recognizing that Joe Hackney is all of those things. But my best guess -- and it is only that -- is that Joe isn't interested in the position. I'd love it if he were, but I think if he is claiming a well deserved rest at this point. There's no question that his intelligence, skill and integrity would bring great benefit to the party, but he has served many long years and is entitled to step back and put himself first for a change. If it were up to me, Joe Hackney would be calling every shot within the party, but it isn't, and I have to say I trust his judgment over my own in this regard.

I think Grier Martin would be

I think Grier Martin would be a perfect fit for Party Chair. His leadership in the House, and his refusal to let sexist, racist redistricting practices by the GOP remove one of the growing female stars in the legislature (Deborah Ross) make him a perfect choice for party chair. While Representative Martin hasn't committed to running yet, you can show your support for him here: https://www.facebook.com/GrierMartinForNcdpChair

I don't support any sitting elected public officer for Chair.

Sorry - just can't support Grier or any other elected public officer for Chair. I didn't support Faison for Chair for exactly the same reason. And we had BIG problems with Jack Nichols when he was both Chair of the Wake Dems and a candidate for County Commissioner.

Frankly I am worried that Grier thinks he knows more than Democratic Party activists who have come to a consensus on many issues through the resolutions and platform process at the meetings of our deliberative bodies. For the people who think that we needed to replace Parker because he thought he knew more than everyone else, do you really think Grier would be much of an improvement?

Just suggesting that we look to current and former county party Chairs, District Chairs and perhaps even some Auxiliary leaders before we consider taking one single sitting legislator out of the trenches on Jones Street this crucial Short Session.

Have to agree

I too do not think it would be a great idea to fill that post and elect a sitting Legislator. We need every Democrat in the House voting at this crucial time to block anything the Republicans want to do. We must have them still in the House or Senate and voting. It is also crucial that we have a newly elected Chair in place long before November and beyond. I would prefer a Grassroots activist who has no political aspirations and cares about the people of the Democratic Party.
