New Charles Taylor Ad: "Soshacurity"

I caught this in the middle of last night's episode of Vanished:

More below the jump...

In case you were having as much trouble understanding what this "actor" had to say as she did reading her cue cards, here is a rough transcript:

This Heath Shuler, he seem like sucha nice young man, but he mus' be despert to ween. Hees tryina skeer us older folks 'bout sosha secyurty. Maybe he dudnt know how important soshacurity is to us. And that Charles Taylor. Never voted to cut soshacurity? If this Heath Shuler were mah kin, I'd warsh his mouth out. He should be ashamed, tryin' ta skeer us like that.

Here is some free advice for the Taylor campaign:

1) It's called "Social Security", not "soshacurity."

2) If you're going to get some old lady on camera saying that Charles Taylor never voted to cut "soshacurity", at least have to common decency to show her the following roll call records, where EVERY SINGLE TIME Taylor voted to raid the "soshacurity" trust fund.

- HCR 83, Vote #70, 3/28/01
- H Con Res 83, Vote #104, 5/9/01
- HCR 353, Vote #77, 3/20/02
- HCR 95, Vote #81, 3/21/03
- HCR 95, Vote #141, 4/11/03
- HCR 393, Vote #92, 3/25/04
- SCR 95, Vote #198, 5/19/04
- HCR 95, Vote #88, 3/17/05
- HCR 95, Vote # 149, 4/28/05

3) While you're at it, maybe you can show... I think we need to give her a name at this point. How about... Gladys Buckner? Yeah. Maybe you can show Gladys Taylor's vote on HR 2590 (Vote# 273) on 7/25/2001, where he supported Bush's "soshacurity" privatization plan by voting against an amendment to the Treasury Appropriations bill that would have prevented the White House from implementing it in the first place?

4) For God's sake, man! At least get someone who can speak frickin' ENGLISH!!! Jeebus, for a second there I thought Nell Kellty was going to wander into the frame doing her "Taeee inna WEEEEEND!" dance.

5) Most importantly - and you folks in the Taylor campaign really should pay attention here - lies will never become truth just because a sweet old lady like Gladys Buckner sits in front of a camera and reads them off of cue cards.

Comments

I'm Charles Taylor (T)

and I'm so pathetic, I actually PAID somebody to produce this piece-o-crap commercial.

The response ad could be so simple.

I hope they put something out today. BTW, TV time during Vanished must be expensive and I can't imagine it has a huge senior crowd watching it?

An ad buy is an ad buy

I just spoke to someone @ WLOS' sales department (the "I'm writing a paper for a poli sci class" bit works every time! Heh.) and while there are exceptions, their ad buys are usually on a weekly basis, and while they do try to adhere to FEC regulations (the whole "equal time" thing), there is usually a little bit of negotiation when it comes to ad placement, like x-amount of plays during prime time, y-amount during daytime programming - soaps, Oprah doing her "You Go Girlfriend!" schtick, Maury Povich's Daily Baby Daddy Drama...

When I lived in DC, my then-girlfriend worked for an ad agency in Bethesda, MD, and there were always instances when a station that they brokered an ad buy through failed to play the ad within a ten minute window as they promised, they would negotiate a "make good", meaning that in exchange for the station's screw-up, they would run the ad three or for more times, gratis.

Which isn't to say that someone at WLOS (who, lest we forget, are owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, who are basically a right-wing corporate mouthpiece) "occasionally forgets" to run a Taylor ad now and again...

"we're banging pots and pans / to make you understand / we're gonna bury you, man"

So...

they bought prime-time for the ad, but didn't specify during which show it would play?

That's probably right

although it's common to block certain shows that you don't want to run in. Otherwise, they'll put your in rotation and give your a few high profile spots along with a bunch of dogs spots that no one will ever see.

I don't think the Taylor campaign cares...

Part of their campaign strategy is to bombard the 11th District with as many ads as they possibly can, whenever they can get them on the air, on whatever channel (right now they're on all four major network affiliates in the AVL/GSP market, and I think they're also running on that new amalgam WB/UPN network that shows "Everybody Hates Chris"). This is what the $850,000 that Taylor sunk into his campaign (out of his own pockets) is paying for - oversaturation. Natch, his opponents invariably take the bait and throw response ads onto the air.

By the time Nov. 7th comes around - and this happens during every single election year - there will be a fairly large percentage of potential voters who will be so damn sick of the negative campaigning that they won't even bother voting, in protest. Taylor counts on this sort of psychological disenfranchisement - if those people voted for his opponent instead of not voting, then I'm positive that we'd be campaigning for Maggie Lauterer's re-election right now.

Got this strange email yesterday

from Doris Parsons, email address: biscoewalmartceo@yahoo.com:

Please join me in calling on Mr. Foley and the NRCC to donate
his $2.7 million campaign war chest to Robin Hayes. Why the heck
not? His coffers are full of Delay, Abramhoff and Foley money
already. Second most dirty money in the 109th Congress, with not
one red cent returned. Since Robin Hayes apparently has no shame
whatsoever, what's a little more Foley money gonna hurt? Eh, I
say let Robin have it. Don't you?

Wrote her back and said "Hell No!"

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Thought that email was hilarious

Great Post syntax

Thanks for looking up the votes - I Updated my ScruHoo post with the info.

I could understand her, but

I could understand her, but that's probably because I've spent most of my life in WNC. Still, that doesn't save it for being a God-awful commercial.

I am not sure what the problem is

HAHA gotcha...

No I think that it is a horrible ad, and everyword of it is a lie, but I have no trouble with the accent, but then I have lived in MS and have many good friends that happen to be Cajuns....so I understand almost anything....
