Ashevillein via the Mountain Xpress discovers a beautiful thing:
.
.
.

"According to the Mountain Express, "Buncombe County government is announcing a new “Whistleblower Hotline,” a place for citizens to report suspected incidents of “fraud, theft, illegal or unethical behavior” by county employees. The toll-free number is (866) 908-7236."
[...]
Incidents worthy of reporting include:
· theft of county property – money, materials, time
· waste or abuse of county property
· inappropriate or unethical behavior by a county employee or employees

Of course we all know that the Buncombe County commissioners who engaged in the back room deals leading to the proposed Diesel Power Plant in Woodfin are "county employees" who engaged in "unethical behavior". Follow me below the fold for action...

This hotline is a great chance for all of us to blow the whistle on the ducking and dodging done by the skulking County Commissioners who are trying to sell our energy future and our children's health down the road.

Please call today. I know the person answering the phone may be tired of hearing us all day long, but this is how messages get passed along. Go ahead and call.

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingCecil Bothwell's January 24th Mtn. X column or the Canary Coalition's site will give you all the information you need to make a cogent argument that Nathan Ramsey, Carol Peterson, David Gantt, David Young, and Bill Stanley voted for a plan that was devised behind closed doors, avoided public scrutiny, and was ramrodded through the commission despite "overwhelming" opposition.

Hell, just read them this: "In the course of a public hearing, Chairman Nathan Ramsey affirmed that the commissioners had been meeting secretly with Progress Energy over the past two years. "But there was never a quorum present, so it was legal," he said. Contacted later, Commissioners David Gantt and David Young told Xpress they hadn't attended any of those meetings." But then Gantt and Young went ahead and voted for it anyway.

It's unfortunate that the commissioners forfeited the health and welfare of our citizens through this unethical course of action. Now we've got a hotline to let the county's internal mechanisms know that our elected officials are breaking the public trust.

Comments

This campaign is a win-win

If the backroom dealing is considered unethical behavior by the powers that be, (long shot...I know) the commissioners will be punished, called out, shamed, drawn and quartered, tarred and feathered or forced to stand in a small room and breathe a concentrated mix of the foul air produced by an oil-fired power plant. (I do not believe in torture. I do not believe in torture. I do not believe in torture.)

Even if the powers at be do not agree that this behavior is unethical, if the hotline employees get too frustrated with all the calls, that frustration might spill over into the press and gosh, golly, gee - everyone might just find out about all the secrecy and back-room deals and see just how unethically the commissioners conducted themselves.

Do you guys have any provisions for recalling elected officials?

What's the newspaper saying on this one?

The Newspaper

has been quiet on this one.

Fortunately we've got alternative publications like the Mountain Xpress covering the case.

There's no recall mechanism that I'm aware of, and we're still waiting to hear the Democratic Party elite make statements on the affair.

That's why making the hotline call can be effective right now.

The powers-that-be are waiting for the public groundswell to die down, so they can follow through with their plan to pollute our mountains for no reason.

Mind you, it's several Democrats on the County Commission that helped to greenlight this thing.

One such Democrat is Carol Peterson, wife of Bruce Peterson, District Head of operations for Congressman Heath Shuler. This is a tangled, nasty, intraparty, interpersonal miasma of issues.

Fortunately, Heath Shuler is a natural ally of the anti-Diesel Power Plant majority, but the office politics at his Asheville office must be a real mess right now.

Just Got Off The Phone

Strange process.

The hotline is to a "third party" company in Atlanta, GA. They ask for details of the situation, including dates, names, and supporting evidence.

For your edification:

Date of county meeting: Jan. 16, 2007
Names: Nathan Ramsey, Carol Peterson, Bill Stanley
Supporting evidence: Jan. 24, 2007 edition of Mountain Xpress, written by Cecil Bothwell.
Argument: County Commissioners held secret meetings with Progess Energy for two years. Commissioners claim that, since a quorum was never present for said meetings, they were not obliged to disclose the negotiations. This constitutes an intentional subversion of the Democratic process by elected officials and is therefore unethical. Further, the power plant is unnecessary and will harm the health of our residents, which is one of the worst in the state for childhood asthma.

Anyone else done this yet?

Hey... Yes, I did. Last week

Even posted it here and here.

Thanks for the nod, bud!

Anyway... yeah, it is weird, and they kind of blew me off, I think.

I believe I may have been their first call, they did not know what to do.
