Open thread: Happy new year!

Why

I was trying to explain my political passions to a cynic recently. Words failed to make my case. Fortunately, all I really had to do was show this picture of my daughter. This is all the motivation I need to fight the men in Raleigh who want to control her body and her future.

My Why

This is my motivation, with me in Vienna for the New Year. A bucket-full of attitude who will ask you questions until you cry of laughter, shame, or fear.

Beautiful!

What a fun way to spend the new year ... which I suppose is moments away.

Safe travels.

My Why

Because this is a family no matter what the General Assembly says, and one day my home state will see that.

The past, present and future are why

Being held to account for

Being held to account for one's words is a game for losers, a.k.a., leftists, liberals, progressives, communist, atheists, socialists, Muslims, blacks, gays, or whatever they're calling themselves these days.

Right-thinking, Right-thinking people have always known what John Kyl's spokesman said aloud: one's utterances need not be intended as factual statements.

And there's my New Year's gift to Frank Burns. He would be the first to claim that contempt from the left only steels his nerve and strengthens his resolve, so buck up, buddy. Good luck with the whole Rapture thing. (Even if you don't believe it's going to happen this year, plenty of your allies do.)

I wouldn't recommend drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me. -- Hunter S. Thompson

Brandon is parroting the delusion

that many on the left have this crazy idea that only their utterances are gospel and the words of the right are deluded people who cling to their religion and guns. You couldn't be more wrong. Here is what I see from the outside. The left is prone to group think and punish those who think for themselves and claim the emporer has no clothes. I choose to continue to think for myself and speak the truth so that I can help save the left from themselves. This is my New Years gift to the left.

I don't believe in the Rapture thing, but I'm not sure those on the left aren't being deluded by the Mayan thing. Good luck with that, the world will continue and keep on spinning, and the climate will continue to change on its own, with no help from mankind.

No thanks

Some gifts are so special they should be kept.

Happy new year, Frank.

That's not the outside, Frank

Every opinion I've seen you express here is simply regurgitated right-wing talking points, most of them originating from astroturf think-tanks that are heavily funded by various industries only interested in one thing: controlling the wants and needs of the consuming public.

You claim you "think for yourself", but you're just a parrot. And you're a parrot that's just about worn out its perch in this particular aviary. You've continuously insulted people here in an effort to make yourself look better, or heroic, or some sort of nonsense. And frankly Frank, life is simply too short to accomodate such self-delusional, self-serving behavior.

Happy New Year to all the BlueNC

folks who make this place interesting and informative...and sometimes fun. And to Frank and Ironbolt and some of the other dipwads who sleaze in and out, I hope you get some help with your problems.

Stan, my advice to you...

is to think for yourself and avoid disparaging those who disagree with you. It's a sign of weakness in your position when you do that. Remember there are always more than one position on every issue and the left does not have all the answers. Conservatives offer other solutions based on the application of logic with no emotion. Have a happy new year.

Thanks for the advice, Frank, but I've been thinking for myself

for decades and I kinda like disparaging folks like you. Of course there's more than one opinion on every subject, but sometimes some of those opinions reek of ideology rather than real thinking. I'm glad to hear you say conservatives make their decisions based on emotionless logic. It confirms my' thinking that the GOP is soulless, often acting without compassion for their fellow man, and interested only in results without consideration for the means by which they are attained. And, the results they/you seem most interested in are increasing personal wealth and power....and interfering in the lives of others to try to impose your/their ideology...and often bigotry. So, Frank, I really don't give a %#$@ what you think.

New Year's Day Music...

(sorry it's a few hours early...but you get the drift)

Try to keep it down ... I was up kinda late last night ...

Fun!

Now that I'm 60+, we celebrate new years in either the Newfoundland or Iceland time zone, which means we're usually sound asleep by 11 pm.

Happy new year, sir. We ought to get together this year and compare notes about our post-USNA trajectories. Mine's been a roller coaster.

Inspiration from the Ministry of Truth

From Big Orange.

In 2012 I want to work to make the world better. Not more conservative, not more beholden to the old way of doing things that have not worked. Better. A better world. Better for everyone.

In 2012 I want to Occupy the Dream.

We CAN afford to invest in good, affordable education for everyone.

We CAN afford to make preventative, affordable health care available to everyone.

We CAN afford to invest in rebuilding America, in building 1st world infrastructure and renewable energy.

We not only CAN afford, it, we can't afford to NOT do so.

These are not idealistic thoughts. These are pragmatic thoughts.

We can reject racism, sexism, homophobia, religious differences, xenophobia against immigrants, all the things that motivate people to vote out of hate, we can reject all of these things and the people who promote these divide and conquer tactics. It is 2012. If not now, when?

We can respect and defend a women's right to choose.

We can respect and defend a persons right to love whomever they want to and their right to marry that person if they so wish.

We can respect and vigorously defend our civil liberties and our constitutional rights. The 1st and 4th Amendments are just as important as the 2nd and 10th.

These are not radical choices, these are pragmatic choices, and these are the right choices.

We can fight for the right to collectively bargain for good wages and working conditions.

We can fight for the idea that only people are people, not corporations.

We can fight to put people ahead of profits.

We can fight for these things and many more. For accountability. For justice.

The one thing I've learned is that you have to fight, it's the only way you can win.

And we can fight to fix this world, a world that often seems broken and rigged. We can fight, we can dream, and we owe it to ourselves to make that dream come true. It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight, but it must happen, it must. What better place then here? What better time then now?

In 2012 my new years resolution is to fight. I want to fight for that dream. I want to make it real, little by little, a day at a time, until that dream comes true, a simple, pragmatic idea of a better world for all of us, I want to fight like hell to make it happen. This isn't the end. This is the beginning of the beginning.

So cheers to one and all. Happy New Year! May good health and good fortune find you and yours in 2012. I vow to fight. That is my resolution.

We are unstoppable. Another world is possible.

A vastly better world is possible.
