Know your wackos: Fred Smith (R) Clayton

UPDATE: It was an oversight on my part not to say there's a solid alternative to Senator Flintstone in NC-12. Her name is Sherry Altman, and you can see what a real progressive looks like right here.

Despite the fact that the 2006 elections are still two months away, NC Senator Fred Smith of Clayton is shifting his beady eyes toward the Governor's mansion - trying to position himself as the go-to guy for North Carolina neocons in 2008. If you go to his website, you'll see he does a damn good job holding his own on the lunatic fringe.

With an ego the size of five gigantic billboards between Clayton and Goldsboro, Fred Smith is a run-of-the-mill developer with all the delusions of grandeur you'd expect from a guy who builds extravagant houses in golf course communities. (His business could use some tech help, though, his website doesn't handle Firefox.)

Spend some time reading about Fred's positions on issues and you'll get that sinking feeling that comes from any close encounter with the Dark Side. It's recycled garbage lifted straight from the Karl Rove 'divide and conquer' playbook, and not much else. Consider, for example, this enlightened discussion of the environment, an issue Fred conflates with "roads."

Our citizens spend more time stuck in traffic than ever before – and the congestion just keeps getting worse. Wasting time sitting in traffic makes it harder to find family time, harder for businesses to operate efficiently, and pollutes the environment. North Carolina needs new thinking on environmental and transportation issues. We also need straight talk and clear vision on the problem of growth that outpaces infrastructure. The Liberal Democrats aren’t addressing this issue because they have presided over the deterioration of our current roads and the slow pace of new construction.

There you go, tree-huggers. The one thing Fred Smith has to say about the environment? Build more roads. Although I guess that's not surprising coming from a guy who makes a living building more roads so rich people can get to his fancy new houses. Which brings us to our first conclusion about this aspiring candidate: Governor Fred Smith would be a disaster for North Carolina's environment.

UPDATE: I wonder why a guy who's the CEO of this company would want to the state to pave more roads?

Next Fred sets his sites on destroying education:

Unfortunately, the current Liberal Democrats have almost accepted the fact that our schools are failing. ::
Charter schools are reforming education with a fresh innovative approach to teaching. Foremost, charter schools are public schools. They meet the needs not met by existing public school systems and I strongly support them. Many charter schools, freed of bureaucratic regulations imposed by the state, have been successful at raising test scores and improving student performance. When applied correctly, this non-selective, tuition free alternative creates an achievement-oriented culture that drives performance.

It looks like Fred is getting his talking points from the government-haters at the John Locke Foundation, who despite compelling evidence of failure, continue to beat the drum for more and more charter schools. Mr. Smith appears to be just another ideologue, pushing for whatever suits his political agenda whether it actually works or not. Which leads to our second conclusion: Governor Fred Smith would be a disaster for public education.

If you can believe it, Mr. Smith's position on issues goes straight down hill from there:

He's a defender of marriage, as long as you're not gay.

He thinks the solution to crime is to build more prisons.

He lies about North Carolina taxes making our state uncompetitive in the face of clear evidence that's not true.

He promotes the failed policy of abstinence-only sex education.

He wants to control borders but says nothing about the businesses that hire illegal workers.

And he thinks North Carolina should take its cue on policy the state George Bush wrecked before he turned his attention to ruining the whole damned country.

So in addition to being a potential disaster for public education and the environment, it's clear that Mr. Smith is just another government hating ideologue who wants to impose his own personal brand of morality on millions of North Carolinians. He wants to marginalize gays and demonize immigrants - and his favorite tactic these days appears to be blaming "liberal Democrats" for making North Carolina such a horrible place, while laughing all the way to the bank.

Unless something dramatic happens, the Republican candidate for governor will find himself going toe-to-toe with either Bev Perdue or Roy Moore. Either one of them will kick his butt all the way back to Clayton.

So in honor of this likely candidate and what he wants to do to North Carolina, I hereby dub Fred Smith "Senator Flintsone." Yabba-dabba-freakin-doo.

I'll bet Senator Flintstone

is a really nice guy and that he works hard for a living. Let's just make sure he works hard at something besides destroying North Carolina.

A, where do these primordial types get their opinions?

Does the Republican party have some kind of hate America and All Americans school that they indoctrinate these low-mentality, high dollar types?

A, you should run for office. With your brain, you could "out weigh" them if they all got on the scale together!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

How many millions do you

How many millions do you suppose Senator Flintstone saved when the Clayton Town Council recently let him expand Riverwood but doctored the expansion in under the old rules, ignoring their recently adopted Uniform Code?

Hadn't heard about that one.

If there's one thing that pisses me off it's public officials profiting from their public service because of the influence they exert.

Who can help us get to the bottom Fredly's twisting of rules and regulations to fatten his wallet?

I'm betting Senator Flintstone's developments suck when it comes to environmental practices, gray water re-use, pesticides, and big, expansive lawns. Is he in bed with county planners and building inspectors?

Has anyone ever looked at his employment practices? Is he 'by the book' when it comes to hiring undocumented workers (or subcontractors that hire undocumented workers) on all his construction projects? Or is he getting rich on the backs of immigrant workers who can't afford to complain?

woot!! Anglico's my hero!

Thanks for doing this, Anglico.

Yesterday we had a great Get Out the Vote training session here in Johnston County. There are Rethugs around here intent on using a 501(3)c -- or some numbered shell game like that -- to hide their identity and their purpose to get rid of Democrats on our School Board. They're in the process of turning school board seats back into a defacto partisan races.

I'll write more later this evening. Gotta keep my promises to my kid and then go run our weekend errands now!!

Again, THANKS ANGLICO!!!

Senator Fred Smith

You really are giving Fred too much publicity. We need to focus on the real issues that hardworking people want to see addressed. He is old news. At the Kids For Sherry car wash this weekend hardworking citizens talked to Sherry about real issues and "I" listened. I hope to get an article in the newspapers about our car wash and how great it was for a candidate to meet the citizens. The Kids learned alot and had fun. We should show the difference in this kind of campaign as opposed to a campaign for the wealthy with $4,000.00 sponsorships on the same day. The only way to change laws, like campaign finance reform, is to walk the walk. I need more publicity about our campaign and how we are walking the walk to get our District on the map. Stop giving him publicity!

The Democrats in our area are doing a great job of trying to Get Out The Vote and I truly believe WE will win! Democrats, Republicans and Independents all know that a change is needed and WE will pull it out!

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm not worried about too many people taking my entry as a vote of confidence for Senator Flintstone, but you're right to point out that I didn't focus on the current race. I've added an update, and a link to Sherry Altman's site.

Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you for the link to the Sherry For Senate website. Would like to meet you sometime.

I'm pretty sure that the kind of people who live in golf course communities don't use Firefox.

Mr Smith

As mentioned at myBi-Lo, Sell High post, Fred Smith is the top recipient of contributions from payday lender Compucredit to NC legislators. Compucredit owners gave heavily to Ralph Reed's unsuccessful run for GA Lt. Governor Republican primary. Some bedfellows.

Smith gets so much money from the real estate and construction industry that he can hardly keep up with it. He booked $6,000 in one election cycle from Hal Perry (real estate) an excess of $2,000 which has never been corrected.

Smith's campaign also has a pattern of getting large individual contributions (up to $4,000) from employees and their spouses and, contractors that do business with him. They either love him like crazy or don't want to lose their income.

Great digging, Greg.

Smith sounds like a typical Republican blowhard who leans heavily on 'friends and family' to pony up for his campaigns. He's rich enough to buy his own elections, but these folks would always rather spend OPM to demonstrate broad based 'support.'

And why wouldn't they. It would appear that investments in Senator Flintstone's campaigns yield untold rewards.

Digging deep

One interesting contribution to Fred Smith's campaign is $4,000 from a teacher who happens to be the wife of Jonathan Hill, a former Director of NC Citizens for a Sound Economy (now Freedomworks), who was hired by Smith to manage his political affairs.

Hill is listed variously as Smith's legislative aide, chief of staff and as VP Public Policy for the Fred Smith Company. These kinds of contributions have the appearance of a pass-through but as current election law stands it would take subpoenas and depositions to determine whether they are anything other than legitimate and freely given.

Is there any way of knowing how much revnue

Smith has received from the State of North Carolina. CCM is a gigantic hog slopping at the public trough . . . which completely explains why Senator Flintstone thinks building more roads is the answer to all ills.
