I beg to differ . . . now with bright idea!

With all due respect to the man, who proclaimed that "all politics is local," the Tipster got it wrong.

For more than a generation, American's have accepted Speaker O'Neill's folksy wisdom as a guiding principle. After all, it's local office impact that matters most, right?

Not quite. Because by jumping on the "all politics is local" bandwagon, progressives unwittingly buy into core Republican values: greed and selfishness. And in doing so, a game that is rigged from the outset to pit good people against one another. Thus corporate whores like Hayes, Taylor and Foxx spend their careers slopping at the trough of government spending to bring home the bacon.

'Looka what I'm doing fo' my distric'.'

As government-hating Republicans, they slam public spending every chance they get, all the while selling votes to fund some highway contractor so they can brag about how hard they're working for their constituents.

But there's a problem. "All politics is local" tells voters that the choice between the Lyin' Robin and Honest Larry only affects the 8th district. It says that what's good for that district is unrelated to what's good for America and for the rest of the world. Republicans win when we think that way.

I know it's hard to worry about the big picture when you don't have a job or insurance. I understand the importance of taking care of family and community first. And I also know that Republican policies make life more difficult in almost every way for regular people. Only the richest - the friends of Taylor Hayes Foxx, LLC - really benefit

"All politics is local" ignores the fundamental connections that bind us each to one another. It ignores the fact that what happens in one Congressional district can ricochet around the world, affecting what happens in Iraq and Afghanistan and China and North Korea and more.

Even though a Democrat said it, "all politics is local" is a death sentence for the common good.

UPDATE:

Will you join me in writing . . .

An open letter to North Carolians with Republican Congressmen

One month from today you have the opportunity to change the course of history. Using the most powerful tool in the world, your vote, you can restore America's integrity and honor.

The current Republican Congress has betrayed American values. They have sold out to moneyed interests, driving up stock prices and driving down wages. They have pushed through health policies that protect drug companies instead of senior citizens. They have created massive deficits. They want to stay the course in an insane war. They condone the practice of torture.

North Carolina's Republican members of Congress are part a big problem right now. They're not taking care of your district, because they can't take care of America. And if they stay in power, bad will turn to worse. You can see it coming.

The only way to change the course is for one house of Congress to be controlled by Democrats. When you walk into the voting booth on November 7th, please vote Democratic. You're the one who can make the change.

Thank you SO much.

Your neighbors

Let's write the right letter and get a million Democrats to sign it. I bet Jerry Meek will help.

Damn Straight A!

You have nailed it, right on the noggin-head. I have been spouting the "all politics is local" mantra, at the same time supporting Kissell and Schuler and Miller. DUH! Sometimes it takes a sharp rap to the head to realize the truth. Thanks for this, and if you don't mind, I am going to steal your open letter and post it at my blog.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Thanks, Momo

You can steal anything of mine anytime you want.

The people of the 8th district really should understood that a vote for Larry Kissell is a vote that will change the world for the better. They really do have that power.

Our GOP state reps wreak ...

with the smell of arrogant hubris just like the DC Republicans. They're all the same, local or otherwise. The GOP practices "franchise politics." A Repulican from NC looks, talks and votes exactly the same as a Republican from TX, FL, TN or IL. They serve themselves always ... and others only when it makes them money. They are all cut from the same cloth as Hastert, DeLay, Frist, George W. and the rest.

Same smirk.

Same cloth.

Same stench.

Just don't know where else to post this....

Been googling for an article and found this, I've been spreading it around the web as much as possible. This is from a 1991 speech by Cheney:

I think that the proposition of going to Baghdad is also fallacious. I think if we were going to remove Saddam Hussein we would have had to go all the way to Baghdad, we would have to commit a lot of force because I do not believe he would wait in the Presidential Palace for us to arrive. I think we'd have had to hunt him down. And once we'd done that and we'd gotten rid of Saddam Hussein and his government, then we'd have had to put another government in its place.
What kind of government? Should it be a Sunni government or Shi'i government or a Kurdish government or Ba'athist regime? Or maybe we want to bring in some of the Islamic fundamentalists? How long would we have had to stay in Baghdad to keep that government in place? What would happen to the government once U.S. forces withdrew? How many casualties should the United States accept in that effort to try to create clarity and stability in a situation that is inherently unstable?
I think it is vitally important for a President to know when to use military force. I think it is also very important for him to know when not to commit U.S. military force. And it's my view that the President got it right both times, that it would have been a mistake for us to get bogged down in the quagmire inside Iraq. -- Dick Cheney 4/29/1991

A, Love the letter

Where can we host/post it?

I'm thinking

of turning it into some kind of online petition that might fly around the tubes and garner some MSM attention. Really, wouldn't it be amazing if a million North Carolinians signed such a letter? Or even 100,000.

Surely we could use an idea like this as part of GOTV outreach.

I've already signed one online petition today . . . it was easy. Maybe that's a place to start. I'll do some checking.

Petition!

I have just started a petition, which I hope you will go sign.

And please share your thoughts about how to spread the word.

Thanks.

Proud to add

my John Hancock to your petition, A. Excellent idea.

The Dark Side Chronicles

Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory says he wants to change the culture in Raleigh. I guess that's why he wrote this letter to PAC lobbyists asking for their fundraising help. Change you can believe in? Riiiiiiight. Join the conversation here.
