NOM comes to NC, finds itself in the minority

The National Organization for Marriage, an anti-marriage equality organization, bussed into Raleigh from out of state today for a summer afternoon protest. I imagine they were surprised to find they were in the minority here in NC when they held a rally that almost no one showed up to. The counter-demonstration however had a little over 200 people.

From WRAL:

A national group touring the country to show support for traditional marriage rallied outside the State Capitol on Tuesday, calling on North Carolina to adopt a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. A few dozen people gathered for the presentation by the National Organization for Marriage, which is holding more than 20 events across much of the country during a bus tour to oppose gay marriage. Meanwhile, a larger crowd supporting gay rights held a counter-demonstration across the street.

I put together a few photos to share here,

I took a wide view of NOM's protest. At the height of the protest I counted around 40-something ppl on their side.

I counted just over 200 people on our side.

I was happy to see the Equality NC presence, with their executive director there no less. Someone from the NC Democratic Party was their too. She had a clipboard to sign up for more info, and she chatted about some local races, and of course Elaine Marshall for Senate (an equality supporter on UAFA, DOMA repeal, ENDA, DADT repeal)

My old sign, it has suffered through heavy rain, heat, wind, 3 or 4 protests and rallies, a candle light vigil, and now this. Glad its held up so well. Glad I got it lamented too. That last picture I stole from Pam's photobucket (of Pam's House Blend). I saw I was in the background of several shots, but this one had my husband with me, so I liked it.

I hoped you would

have some pics from this event, Jake. I'd heard on the radio earlier the NOM's had 70 or so in attendence, but I think you're right about the lower number.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

yeah

I'll admit my count of their side was a little more difficult. We tried to keep our side across the street so they wouldn't feel intimidated since we had such a larger crowd. I counted aloud everyone on the Equality side so I'm very confident in my number of 200. On two occasions, one in the middle of the event, I tried to count the other side and each time came up in the 40s. I talked to Pam Spaulding, of Pam's House Blend, and that was the number she was thinking too... and she was one of the few to cross over to their side for documentation purposes. I would think maybe, just maybe, they had 50 people on their side if you counted a few of the cops around the edges & the reporters mingled in. But even if they had 70, it shows just how much they are losing on the issue. They had a central organizing force with funding, we had a few facebook groups, blog posts, and message board posts, they bussed people in, we relied on locals, and we still way out numbered them.

NOM news roundup -- with links

Equality NC's blog has a link farm for the reports on the protest.

A few more pics from the event

A few of their side too (the 2 on the right I borrowed from PHB):

The generational gap here is pretty obvious.

Sexless marriage vs same-sex marriage

I don't mean to be ageist, but damn.

When your most recent memory of having sex recalls hitching up the buggy and heading down to the holler for a picnic, your participation might just lack a little relevance...

ahyeah ... That bus was "Wrapped in the flag

and carrying the cross", it was. A couple of pics over at Isaac Hunter's Tavern make the visual manifestation a little freaky.

Like I tweeted yesterday, how can it be so hard to understand that one citizen does not have a "civil right" to deny another citizen his civil rights?

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

A note on the photos NOM uses on the bus

A fellow blogger found the stock photos NOM plasters on their stuff.

Stock photos bought from a web site. Not real people who believe in their cause.

NOM is astroturf carpetbagging in its highest form.

That feller in the seat next to the tree

looks an awful lot like ole Russell Capps. Remember that guy? Complete nutjub.

CA Weddings can start after 8/18 at 8pm

The stay has been extended until next week, but then, unless a higher court jumps in with an additional stay, the wedding bells can start ringing again in CA =)

More DADT stories

I couldn't seem to post in my old DADT blog entry, so I figured this was related enough to be on topic without starting a whole new blog. I just wanted to share a few more stories on those affected by DADT:
