Is Palin a racist?
I think if Palin is the next George Allen, the next Republican to fall because of racism, then 'Sambo' could be her mukaka.
If the account is true, and if she regularly referred to the aborigines as "Arctic Arabs", then I think she's toast. Perhaps another reason they are keeping her away from the press.
I hate to say this.
After reading the article you referenced, I think they may have chosen her precisely FOR that reason. That sea of lily white faces at the RNC had no clue about the diversity of this nation, and how most of us, no matter what color we are, will no longer stand by while someone - especially someone who ostensibly represents us - spews garbage like that.
I tend to agree that many of them won't care.
Especially given the racial undertones that they have already shown. However, I think there are other, independent voters that will not stand for it. After all, remember that George Allen was the most likely nominee for the Republican nomination before he uttered makaka on camera.
While Phonebanking...
While phonebanking for Obama last week, we got a couple of real prizes on the other end of the line who informed us that they wouldn't be voting for that "n-word". Not to spread the liberal guilt on too think, here....but one of our black volunteers made a comment that she never thought she'd see a day where someone would be ashamed to be white. She's dead-on. People like the Sheriff in the article and some of the McCain supporters I've had the pleasure to speak to in the last week do make me ashamed to be white sometimes. At least I am surely ashamed that I would have ANYTHING on common with people like that, even if it is something as trivial as the color of my skin.
How can there still be so many ignorant people in this world?
Don't be ashamed.
You're making the same mistake that they are - making a generalization based on race. Don't be ashamed to be white, be proud that you are an informed, sensible voter who makes decisions based on policy and good judgment.
Maybe I worded it wrong...
I am ashamed that I share any trait with people like that.
Our biggest obstacle in this campaign is going to be trying to educate people like that. At times it seems insurmountable.
It does seem iinsurmountable
But don't let them get you down. They are the ignorant ones. Find a kind answer but funny answer you can use - like "Well, when he's elected, he'll work for you any way." Something like that. Take their power away from them; take the power of the word away. Does that make sense?
It's disappointing and it's shameful, but it's all too common

What have YOU done today to elect a Democrat?
what do you think guilfords said...
...about the white man?
try to picture the "guilford tribal tribune" reporting on the "white problem"...say around march 1781.
it would probably read something like:
"they are tolerable when they stay in their settlements...but look at the way they live...drunken...and carrying smallpox. committing crimes...why all they do is drink and fight.
even today they are at war with each other.
and look at how they act at the hunting grounds. they monopolize the good spots, and they don't even wave when we hunt buffalo near them.
they don't even bother to learn our language.
savages, that's what they are."
The same could be said today
