Nuke plant language 101

Playing word games doesn't help with the public's trust issues:

In a report posted on the NRC website early Friday, the utility said this resulted in a condition that "significantly" degraded plant safety.

But "the safety significance of this event was minimal" because the Brunswick Nuclear control room operators took appropriate action to shut down the reactor when the elevated leakage was identified

I will sum up my opinion of this incident, and the crafty language used in this report, with two words: "Not cool." And the litany of previous problems is even less cool:

In late September the nuclear power plant tripped offline again when a failure was detected in the reactor's emergency coolant system. This time it returned to service in five days.

The shutdown followed more than 300 days of trouble-free operation after one of its worst periods of performance in years – a 12-month period in 2009 and 2010 when the plant experienced four unplanned shutdowns, two electrical fires and a power failure.

The NRC cited the facility with more than a dozen violations.

There are over 1/3 of a million people living in relatively close proximity to this plant, and every time somebody has a brain fart while working at the reactor, they're putting those lives at risk.
