Open thread: Dog days

What a trip life is. One day I'm all excited because I've found a publisher for my novel ... and the next day I'm knee-deep in more Blackwater creepiness than you can shake a stick at.

What's up on your side of the street?

IMPEACH!

I will be there.

I will not be wearing orange, Brunette, but I will wear a bright purple winter scarf. My inner goth (who used to be an inner punk) - both of which I'm too old to be - won't let me have a lot of bright clothing, so you'll have to settle for that. :) I hope we'll get to see each other there.

Oh great. Going to da big da-bate

Outwardly - I'm just somebody's mom.

My timing is bad

I won't be able to make it. I committed weeks ago to a volunteer orientation session this evening at 5:30 -- Got the reminder yesterday.

I hate missing the chance to meet you, but will look forward to the next (and to the reports you and Anglico bring back to BNC about how it went).

Just finished

putting in an application at NC Lab Rescue (speaking of dog days). It's been about 10 months since my 13 year old lab—companion, cleaner of crumbs and dropped potato chips, and trusted spiritual director—had a stroke and I had to put her down. Broke my heart. It's time.

Two years

After our dachshund Wally died, it was almost two years before we got Jack. It really does break your heart.

Dogs are the best.

did anyone see this Nature episode on PBS? It's a must see for lovers of the K9.

NATURE's two-part special DOGS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD tells the epic story of the wolf's evolution, how "man's best friend" changed human society and how we in turn have radically transformed dogs. Part one, "The Rise of the Dog," ck local listings for both broadcasts).

You're working WAY too late!

thanks for the heads up about that

We've set it to record, and as long as that machine doesn't blow up (others in my life have been, recently), we'll be watching that.

I'm sorry, are congratulations in order?

Did you just blithely drop the news that you've found a publisher, Anglico?

Thanks!

Yes, I'm going to be an author ... instead of just a writer!

I've been working on a crazy novel, Jesus Swept, for more than six years and I finally found a publisher! The company is called Kitsune Books, owned by wonderful woman named Anne Petty.

I'm very excited!

You should be excited

I'm very proud of you. :)

Great news, A,

is this the steamy Christian novel you've spoken of before? Do you have a cover designed yet? hint..hint.

Congrats, Anglico!

Thanks, Linda.

I'm chronicling the publishing journey every step of the way on my literary blog, and I'm planning to cross post from time to time.

Congrats Anglico....

Could you give us a hint of the storyline? I'll be anxious to get my copy...(autographed, of course :-)

Stan

A hint from the opening of Chapter 3:

When a back-sliding Baptist sees a sign from god wash up on the beach in front of her, she should know enough to worry. But with her passport to paradise having long since expired, this Sunday walker wouldn’t know a sign from god if it bit her on the butt. Which explains why she doesn’t so much as flinch when the cold Atlantic brine crashes hard around her ankles. Doesn’t see the troubled twins who watch her from the dunes. Doesn’t stop to think. Doesn’t think to pray.

Moving fast to break a sweat, moving slow to comb for shells, she tracks the scalloped driftline with abandon. She angles past a willet standing one-legged in the sand, its head tucked onto its back like a spoon. The whisk of her walking springs the bird to life. It skitters away with her thoughts.

She spies a gleaming glimmer in a swirling tidal pool. She stops and stoops and reaches. She falls face first in the foam.

It goes downhill from there, so to speak.

I can't wait

I really can't.

So....how long do I have to wait? :)

Oh...I can't wait either....

Sounds terrific!!

Well...I had a bittersweet moment over the weekend

travelling to Oklahoma for my son's 40th birthday. Makes one realize just how much water has flowed under the bridge...and at the same time a moment of pride. Chris is a Radiation Oncologist...owns his own practice...and his mentor, now retired, stood and spoke saying that if and when someone recieves the worst possible diagnosis, there is only one Doctor in Oklahoma they should turn to..not only for his skills but also for his compassion....my son.

Quite a moment.

Stan Bozarth

Oh Stan

What a beautiful thing to hear said about your own son. I've never met you and Nan, but I have a very strong idea that the heir to the Nanistan throne didn't turn out the way he is by accident. :)

Wow.

That's quite a testament. You must be very - is proud even the word for that? You must be a terrific father.

Thanks Linda and Betsy for your kind words...

We've had our moments...our son and us...making him work as a busboy to earn his spending money and Nan reminding him, at the job she got him in the Operating Room sweeping and cleaning, never to forget the people who earn so much less than Doctors but contribute so much...and to never EVER cause her to have to remind him that MD doesn't mean Medical Deity.

We think it worked...he pays well, has a huge party every Christmas...with bonus checks for all...and is genuinely loved by the large staff he employs.

Yes...we're very proud...and would like to think we had some shall hand, not in what he has done, but in who he is.

Daughter Beth, born on same day two years after Chris, is a Doctor of Psychology...works with children in Marin County, CA.

Not bad for a dad who grew up working his way thru college washing pots and pans and a step-mom to Chris and Beth (for over 20 years) who worked her way thru nursing school...and poured her paychecks and love into seeing them both get an education.

Yeah...we're pretty proud. Now if we can just save our grandchildren from our government...or lack thereof!!

DAMN YOU BLUENC!!!!

For once I didn't write my blog post in Scribe Fire, and I lost it. Can't we please get an Ajax autosave thing like Daily Kos? I'm so sick of this.....

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

That depends

It's on my list, but it depends on how fast we want the site to be and how much we want to require our readers to pay......if you get my drift. I look at everyone's wish list for the site and some of it is easy, some of it we will never do and some of it is cost (read....new server) prohibitive. We can only add so many bells and whistles before we can't maintain the site at current traffic levels and someone starts bitching about the load time. Lance did a really good job of stripping BlueNC of just abut every unnecessary trinket. Slowly we're trying out some new features. As each works and the site hums along we will add something else.

awesome, thanks!!!

I'm just angry at myself for not typing it in Scribe Fire, but I was already typing one diary there when the inspiration hit.

I know...trust me

I lost something just the other day that I'd been working on for a week. Loads of research and I'm trying to retrace my steps. I lost links and everything. I was heartbroken. I'm now compiling in Word for Mac and hating every minute.

Oh, Mel...

I've just posted a new blog that began as a comment here...regarding Mel Watt's endorsement of John Edwards.

I am sooo happy for you, James!

And a little jealous, but I'll get over that here in a minute. :)

Congratulations, buddy!

Congrats A !!!

even though I haven't been around as much lately, I hope I'm still on your list of people who want to buy a signed copy.

I have met both Stan and Nan, they are wonderful people and their children couldn't have turned out any other way.

I'll be back soon, just small spurts now and then, passing kidney stones....yes....ouch!
