Crying children

Maybe I'm going through some kind of weird mid-life adjustment, but crying children are really affecting me these days. Not so much when they stump their toes or skin their knees; physical pain is temporary, and usually wears off in a minute or two. It's the psychological pain of children that really bothers me.

Kids are smart, you know? If I see a 4-6 year-old crying in public these days, I can no longer dismiss it as cranky/spoiled/etc., and just walk off and forget it. It stays with me, sometimes for an hour or longer, with me wondering what's really wrong.

Am I losing it?

Not losing it

There's something primordial about how adults react to crying. Lord knows, there's more than enough tears going around these days to put any caring person on edge.
