Open thread: Whew!

I am happy to report that my wife and I have just wrapped up our final fundraising event of a jam-packed season. Tonight's bash drew 100 or so people to meet a supremely well-qualified candidate for Superior Court in Orange and Chatham Counties, Adam Stein. I've known Adam for almost 20 years and his commitment to justice is quite nearly legendary. If all our courts and cases were managed by people of his caliber, North Carolina would be judicial beacon on the hill.

Adam is running a smart and effective campaign against three nice guys, all of whome I know, and none of whose qualifications even come close to matching. I hope he wins, of course, because of the example of excellence he will set.

I can already feel the withdrawal symptoms coming on.

But I must hasten to add

Despite our successful event, I am truly dismayed by our system of electing judges. If any public officials deserve to avoid the gauntlet of campaigning, it is judges, whose essential work is antithetical to the crush of campaign politics. There simply has to be a better way.

I think I'll be able to relate to the withdrawal thing

The other day my wife asked me "What are you going to do with yourself after the election?"

I haven't really thought that far into the future...

"we're banging pots and pans / to make you understand / we're gonna bury you, man"

Ah, syntax

It's hard to look beyond Nov 7 because so much of what comes after depends on the results of what happens that day. I'm gonna venture a wild guess, though, and predict that when the dust settles, and after a few weeks of R&R and holiday time with family, we'll be here and we'll be working to create a better NC and a better America.

And y'all will still be blowing me away with your wit and your smarts and your absolute brilliance and unwavering dedication. Seriously.

There will be a Progressive Legislative agenda here in NC to attend to, and support to give our progressive Legislators in their efforts. No doubt, new opportunities will present themselves. And some of y'all might even look into running for local office ... elections that happen in odd years in most places I think.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
