OUT OF CONTROL video: Tillis hides behind armed guards
On January 5, Speaker Thom Tillis and the Republican House Majority contrived an unannounced, unconstitutional and unethical late night session to accomplish nothing more than political payback on North Carolina's teachers. Today marked the first time Speaker Tillis has returned to the scene of the crime since that infamous day for another “special session.”
This morning close to 100 citizens rallied outside to keep vigil over Tillis and the NCGA to ensure there were no more dirty tricks.
When we went inside the Legislative Building to stand watch over Tillis as he went to the House Chamber to gavel in session, we were greeted by armed Legislative Police officers, ordered by Tillis and his staff to have us removed from the 2nd floor of the building (where Tillis' office and the House chamber is located).
See the incredible video here.
While we were forced to leave the 2nd floor, lobbyists were allowed to remain outside the Speaker's Office! Legislative Police explained the arcane rule that the second floor was off-limits to the public except for appointment only - a rule nobody can ever remember being enforced.
Lobbyists must have permanent permission to be a Speaker Tillis' front door.

What is next for the legislative cops: goosestepping behind a red flag?

Beyond ridiculous
I've served as an Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms in the NC House, and I've been visiting the Legislative Building for over three decades, and I've never heard of any group being forced to leave the 2nd floor of the Legislative Building.
This is utterly insane.
The Soviets during the Cold War never caused as much nonsense at the Legislative Building as Tillis and these fascists he surrounds himself with.
More proof
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
Disappointing
It's disappointing that a rally largely focused on the need for transparency after the recent midnight madness was a rally where we were kicked out of the 2nd floor of the people's house.
Kudos to Adam Sotak, Organizing Director at Democracy NC, for keeping his cool and managing the crowd so well. We were permitted for the rally, and General Assembly is supposed to be open to the public. They would have made a lot less news today if they hadn't tried to shut down the transparency and democracy.
I'd also given a shout out to Linda Sutton, Democracy NC's triad area organizer for MCing the rally, and to all the great speakers and attendees that were there today. Transparency and good government are nonpartisan ideals that we should all strive for, and though they face challenges, I think events like today help us make progress and highlight areas of concern.
Nice
What a freaking douchebag.
