Picketing of Maxway and Roses stores continues this week

Efforts to educate North Carolinians about the Art Pope Agenda continue this week, with pickets planned for nine of Mr. Pope's stores.

Week 3 of Statewide Art Pope Informational Picket Campaign
Kicks Off With 9 Simultaneous Pickets
Monday, December 16, 2013
4:00 PM

Details below.

Since December 2nd, the NC NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement have been holding statewide informational pickets outside of Budget Director Art Pope-owned stores. This campaign has shined a light on NC Budget Director Art Pope's support and influence on the extremist and regressive direction of North Carolina public policy. These policies hurt the very people who shop and work at the stores he owns.

On Monday, December 16th, the informational picket campaign will continue with eight simultaneous pickets beginning at 4:00 PM in Burlington, Carolina Beach, Wilmington, Dunn, Elizabeth City, Greenville, Rocky Mount, and Wilson. Information about the location of these pickets can be found below. Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II and others will join the Rocky Mount picket and respond to Budget Director Art Pope's December 9th letter.

The informational picket campaign is a statewide effort to raise awareness and demand that Budget Director Pope call for a reversal of extremist laws and policies passed in the 2013 Legislative Session and support the request for a Special Redemption Session of the North Carolina General Assembly to reverse course on two extremist policies, the denial of Medicaid and emergency unemployment benefits that will harm the most vulnerable members of our state. This effort has already spread across the state and pickets have been held in cities including Belmont, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, and Weaverville.

BlueNC first suggested political action against Pope's stores more than four years ago. Facing South called for action more than three years ago. These were seeds planted, but not well watered. It is a testament to Reverend Barber and the Forward Together movement that they have been able to finally make this political action happen.

Lesson: If something is a good idea tomorrow, it's usually a better idea today.

Next round of Pope picket pics

Blue NC is definitely where I first became aware of this particular big money in politics connection. Glad others are becoming aware too.

Here was the scene in Rocky Mount earlier today:

Here's some coverage leading up to the Greenville picket as well from the Greenville Guardian:
