Please, Gimme a Break Already

So here is Tony Snow on Bush about Bush last Tuesday:

(CBS/AP) With just two weeks until Election Day, the White House sought to ease political anxieties over security in Iraq — most notably by no longer saying the United States will "stay the course" in Iraq — but rejected calls from lawmakers for a dramatic policy shift.

White House press secretary Tony Snow said Monday the phrase "stay the course" doesn't capture the "dynamism" of the tactics America and its allies are employing.

"He stopped using it," Snow said of that phrase.

Snow said the United States would adjust its Iraq strategy but would not issue any ultimatums to the Iraqis.

"Are there dramatic shifts in policy? The answer is no," Snow said.

Here is Bush on the campaign trail today:

“I want you to think about the Democrat plan for success. There isn’t one,” Bush told thousands of energized Republicans packed into a high school gymnasium. “They are in agreement on one thing — they will leave before the job is done, and we will not let them.”

Am I the only one confused by this? Do they really think the American people are this stupid? They stay the course, then they don't, but the Democrats won't either??

In sum, the Democrats never said don't stay the course. They said let's define what the course is. The Republicans say stay the course, no questions asked, or until that catch-phrase becomes a political liability.

Three Hundred Billion Dollars. Three Thousand Dead American Troops. Hundreds of Thousands of Dead Iraqi Civilians. All for an election day catch-phrase.

Before, I was passionate. Now, I'm just flat pissed off.

We'll see

The American people could very well be this stupid. That's the scariest thing of all.
