Political Salon: Live Blogging for Traction

Tonight our political salon is featuring a presentation by Lanya Sharpiro, who is the Big Cheese at a very cool organization called Traction. Lanya and her colleagues make a compelling case for their grassroots approach to engaging young activists here in North Carolina.

If you have any questions you'd like me to ask Lanya, just pass them along. Here's a picture of our guest . . . with Howard Dean.

Warm up question for the guests . . .

What's the coolest thing that happened to you this summer?

For me . . . helping to fight (1) the real-estate lobby on the transfer tax and (2) the US Navy's attempted takeover of 30,000 acres in Washington County.

What's yours?

Too much great discussion to report

But if you're a young person looking to merge political activism with living real life, having fun and meeting great people, you should check out Traction. They're getting new people into "tractivism" with a creative blend of community events, parties, and serious grass roots. For example, Traction hosted tail-gate parties at polls.

And dodge ball teams!

Their idea is focused on seducing/cajoling them into participation.

I don't understand

What is the political salon? This was an offline event?

We've been hosting a real-life political salon

for 15 years . . . every month except in June and July. Typically 20 to 35 people show up on Sunday night for lively discussion with a designated presenter.
