Joe Hackney?
Seems that Hackney is getting a lot of national attention right now. Not sure is he would run though.
http://www.joehackney.com/
Bet Joe won't go
I don't think he would be interested. If he were, I'd certainly support him, but my guess is that he wouldn't be interested in running for that office.
In any case, I'm grateful that we've got him right where he is.
I was having the same thought
He'd be an awesome candidate and I'd support him in a heartbeat. And I think he could win. He is the picture of competence.
But you're right. We are lucky to have him as Speaker.
( )
I'm his one vote so far!
Hugh Shelton
National security experience cancels out any perceived GOP advantage.
The general from the metropolis of Speed is great, but...
I prefer veterans from our current wars (but they are my peers, so maybe I'm prejudiced). I think both Cal and Grier would be great, but I admit for voting for Cal in the poll. One of the youngest (if not THE youngest) state senator elected, Iraq veteran who was instrumental in creating the rules in prosecuting private contractors in Iraq, great family, successful private practice...he brings a lot to the race and to our state!
We will rerun this poll or bump it back up on Monday
We have added a few names, so let's keep making suggestions over the weekend. Try to give some pros/cons to the person's candidacy and maybe we can do a writeup on each before another poll.

Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.
If you cancel
your vote after this is bumped w/ names added, can you revote? or after you cancel your vote would you not be able to vote again?
You should be able to revote.
Let me know if you have problems with that.

talked with Cal Cunningham
talked with Cal Cunningham today at the 12th district convention. If he has a good campaign manager, he could have a decent shot in the primary.
other candidates
What about Jerry Meek or Walter Dalton?
Cal Cunningham

This guy prosecuted killer contractors in Iraq. He's got my vote.
Not for Senate, but this guy is interesting....
Cal is a great guy...known him for years and the sky is the limit for him. On another note, I met a guy yesterday at the 5th District Convention in Statesville who I believe has "it". Doesn't have enough background from what I could gather to run for Senate but I think could do real damage against Foxx. Seems very intelligent...I thought, had a real way with the folks he interacted with. Grew up in Winston, young (maybe 33 or 34), African-American, professor at WSSU. I did some checking around on the guy (Ed Hanes) and found out some pretty interesting things: UNC undergrad/law and....got his masters in Administration and Public Policy from Harvard. Teaches business law at the school and is the head compliance officer on campus (EEO/AA Officer....thought that was interesting at an HBCU). Married and has a young daughter. Kind of spooky, right? I don't know his interest but he seems to have the "bones" of a winner. One never knows...the timing might be right even if, on its face, it just doesn't look that way. Somebody needs to be reaching out to this guy....can't possibly be worse then putting up another candidate from outside of Winston-Salem.
Oh my....he sounds close to perfect
I wonder how many other "close to perfects" are out there waiting for someone to ask them to run?

Wow! You found Ed Hanes!
Yep, he's on my radar too, and I agree. the 5th district isn't a great fit, but Earline Parmon or Linda Garrou's seats ARE. Let's send him to Raleigh!
Wow! You found Ed Hanes!
Is Garrou not seeking to return in 2010? Why run him against an established Dem...I'm telling you, I think this guy has the temperament and bones to be very very interesting. We need a person that first passes the look and smell test of a winner. That kind of background he has and look gets people interested right away (i.e. he strikes a great image...good looking tall guy and has the brains). I believe that plenty....plenty of folk on the right who live in West Winston and West Forsyth (i.e. the big money) are sick of Foxx embarrassing them (perhaps 1/3 or more of them). Depending on his politics (i.e. how moderate he is and I just don't know the answer to that) he impressed me...immediately. Whoever runs against her has to be a pro life (even tempered) and Obama aligned view on gay marriage...and Dems in the 5th and especially Forsyth have to support that!!! Pro choice and pro gay marriage Dem can never win it...may as well hang it up.
Who knows and can reach out to him to get the low down on his interest (and, frankly, feel him out to see if there is depth and substance to go with the exterior)
Cal Lives in the 12th
I met Cal on Sat. at the 12 distric convention and was really impressed. It seems he was making the rounds because he also stopped by the 5th convention as well. Cal lives in winston in the 12th District.
One thing that strickes me as odd is Richard Moore isn't on this list. I have heard from other folks in High Point, Richard is polling at around 30%, But could just be name recognition.
He has said repeatedly he is not running
I didn't include Roy Cooper for the same reason. Mel Watt has repeatedly told me he isn't interested. I have been thinking I should have included his name as well.

One more thing about Cal
After speaking with Cal I found out he was a state senator and then served 2 tours in Iraq as a reservist. He was part of the JAG core that prosecuted many of the criminal actions of the contracting firms working in Iraq.
Dropping in late
Dropping into the conversation late, but having met both of them I can say that anyone who likes Grier is going to like Cal. They are cut from the same cloth, with similar backgrounds, although in some ways Cal might be even stronger of a statewide candidate.
"Keep the Faith"
Cal at the 5th
Didn't see Cal at the 5th....
More on Ed Hanes
It gets better the more I find out. Talked to a contact at the law school. Apparently he was pretty well respected while he was there....Gene Nichols was Dean (later went to William and Mary as Chancellor and left under preassure a couple of years later). First Black Student Government Association President at the Law School, Carolina Basketball Player as an undergraduate (Freshman year, which, I suppose means he walked on...maybe the Freshman team or something) etc. etc. Linked In profile gives the rest of the story.....strong. http://www.linkedin.com/ppl/webprofile?action=vmi&id=31728026&pvs=pp&aut...
Frank, if you know him reach out!
