Possible solution for schools for the deaf
Unfortunately, it would depend upon the Legislature's support:
The department proposes consolidating the administrative services at Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh and Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf in Wilson. The Governor Morehead School would serve as a satellite campus of ENCSD, and students would continue to attend classes at the school.
It's a great idea actually, but (big surprise) it goes against the Republicans' "cut first ask no questions later" lawmaking:
The N.C. General Assembly directed the department to close one campus and consolidate services at the remaining two schools in Session Law 2011-7.25(a). N.C. DPI must report the recommendations to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by Jan. 15.
Right. Because, while deaf students may have lost one ability, they have attained the power to teleport themselves across the state on a daily basis. They really don't even need a school here in North Carolina, since there's a perfectly good one in Delaware. Or was it Maine? Whatever, they can teleport themselves around until they find one.

Other consequences
Not to mention the jobs that will be lost in Burke County. The school employs about 200 people, and there are businesses all over the county that provide specialized services for the Deaf community. In an already severely depressed area, the closing will have a significantly negative impact.
