The Price is wrong

David Price is a friend and a neighbor, so I hate like hell to criticize him. But whatever the short-term benefits of his new plan to beef up border security, it's pouring good money after bad policy with no hope whatsoever of addressing the underlying problem.

With the cartels fighting the Mexican government and amongst themselves for drug, alien and weapons trafficking routes, we have to prevent any threat of spill over violence and shut down illicit smuggling operations,” Price said in a statement.

Cartels are fighting the Mexican government and among themselves for one reason and one reason only: America's idiotic War on Drugs. Sorry, Mr. Price. You're playing a game of international whack-a-mole, with a thousand times more moles than whackers. No amount of taxpayer money for border patrols will make any difference whatsoever ... and you know it.

I agree 100%

If you want to truly hurt the cartels, legalize drugs and remove their source of income.

Hey! We could hurt the Taliban the same way!!

Treatment is a viable alternative for increased funding

But treatment centers aren't nearly as "sexy" as m-16's on the border nor are they as visible as a fence. Also defense contractors aren't in the drug rehab business so it's not a way for them to get $$$ from D.C.

In the 70's 2/3's of funding went to treatment, 1/3 to interdiction. That ratio has been reversed.

Use the money for treatment

This money would be so much better spent on dealing with the health consequences than trying to stick a thumb in a hole.

weapons trafficking routes

And the weapons trafficking routes are one way going South. The current scope of drug violence in Mexico is only possible because of mass quantities of weapons purchased within the United States. To say nothing of NAFTA...

If the goal is to stop terrorism from passing through the border the security cameras are probably facing the wrong direction.

But of course that is not the goal - the goal is to placate nativists and Fox News viewers and show that we are willing to respond to any threat, no matter how manufactured it may be.

$600 million

Mr. Price managed to get this wasteful legislation through the House today. A grand total of $600 million dollars, flushed down the toilet with no strategic value whatsoever.
