Why “Confronting Corporatocracy and Saving Democracy?”

The initial elation that followed the election of Barack Obama has quickly yielded to the stark reminder that our elected representatives, Republican and Democrat alike, are by and large owned by powerful, monied interests: Big Banks, Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Defense Contractors. Our democratic ideal, "government by, of and for the people" has very little currency in the halls of power.

We have only to look at the legislation that has churned through Congress so far this year - healthcare reform, the climate bill, and financial regulation - to see how those who have the most to gain financially have had the most influence. Heavily lobbied-for bills have been passed that were barely, if at all-read by politicians who voted for them. The closed-door wrangling around healthcare reform is the most recent evidence that the strong majorities of Americans who want a single-payer system have been shut out completely. The pattern is the same in the North Carolina legislature, with the powerful business lobbies paying the piper and calling the tune.

The silence coming from the Democratic Party about the blatant conflicts of interests at play in policy making is deafening. Progressives must not sit on the sidelines and passively watch the further erosion of our democracy and the highjacking of the most important legislative agenda since the Great Depression. People all across the country are seething mad (and hurting fiercely) and want the "change" they were promised for their Democratic votes!

As Frederick Douglas said, "Power concedes nothing with out demand." The greatest challenge of our times remains to muster our collective will, strength and courage as actively engaged citizens, and to make our demands for justice and peace that speak more loudly and powerfully than all the stinkin' money on Wall Street. Like the muckrakers and trustbusters of the 20th century, progressives must once again become leaders in the movement for a better world.

I hope to see many of you there!

Don't really have a comment,
