Props to Hamp

Until today, I've been singularly unimpressed with Hampton Dellinger as a candidate for Lt. Governor. With grass-roots heroes like Pat Smathers and true progressives like Dan Besse in the race, Mr. Dellinger seemed a little too much a part of the machine, a little too slick, and just not didn't set himself apart. Not in the race, at least for me. Until today.

Hamp (I'm going to take the liberty of calling him Hamp)added a Kid's Page to his website. Very Smart. Read more below the fold.

The page is clean, accessible with a video where Hamp encourages fitness through bike-riding, and shows how a simple interest like that can even get you into politics!

He's included a message to parents

I hope every person of voting age reading this will also look at other parts of my website—www.HD08.com—to learn about my commitment to well-funded and effective schools, safe and sustainable communities, healthy children and a healthy environment, and honest and responsive government.

As Lieutenant Governor I won’t be able to help kids when their parents tell them to eat their vegetables. In fact, I want to see students across North Carolina have more locally grown vegetables and fruits as part of their school lunches. But I will be able to help kids and parents make this state the best place in the country to live, go to school, and be a family.

But the thing that impressed me about this is very simple. Hamp included a short Thanksgiving story that can be downloaded and read to children. (I say read to rather than read by because the reading level is about 9th grade, so it's definitely for an adult to read to a child.) The story is not overtly ethno- or religiocentric. Most families in NC will find the story of Willie B. Ford and his Thanksgiving proclamation a sweet read.

Every educator and most parents know that there is no better way to encourage children to read on their own than to read to them.

Will I vote for Hamp? I don't know. As we've noted before, NC has an embarrassment of riches in good Democrats, especially in the Lt. Governor's race. It will take me a while to weigh out all the issues and compare the candidates. But Hampton Dellinger just put himself back in the race for my vote.

Good on ya, Hamp. Great job.

Very Nice

Thanks for making sure we saw this. He's already at the top of my list, but I do have a list. Both Besse and Smathers are on it. I haven't met Smathers yet, but the enthusiasm that you and Blue South have for him is palpable and has convinced me to keep looking his way.

I have to admit that Pat is still on the top of my list.

I'm not sure I can even articulate why. There's something visceral that makes me trust him. But I haven't decided - as I have posted before, I'd love to see several of these candidates share the position, and I'd like for all of them to have a role in state government.

The way I see, the worst choice would be Dalton - and that's based on personal experience. He was the speaker at our county convention. As recording secretary, I sat next to him. He didn't pay attention to the resolutions/discussions, etc. He just kept checking his watch. Before the convention started, he really only spoke to the people wearing suits and ties. ::shrug::: I thought those were telling details. Moore County wasn't important to him. (I'm sure he'd say otherwise, but this was my personal impression of him.)

I really believe that with Smathers, Besse, or Dellinger, we can't go wrong. Now it's just figuring out who is the best of the best.

Well, you know the old saying....

Trust your gut. :)

Dalton

From what I heard, Dalton refused to come and speak to our local Seniors meeting because Pat Smathers was also invited. We were told Dalton would only come and speak if he would be the only speaker for the night.
So the only one that came to the meeting and spoke was Pat Smathers :-)

Dalton is a Democrat?

I researched Dalton a little, and he seems to be moderate or moderate-conservative.

Someone at the SEC meeting in Greensboro was telling me that he transfered $200,000 from his '06 Senate campaign to his Lt Governor campaign. That may be legal, but certainly not ethical.

Dalton is indeed a Democrat

As for the transfer of funds, I'm pretty sure that's not uncommon. As you state, it's not illegal. If he didn't transfer it to his new campaign for the different office, what would you suggest he do with the money - ethically speaking?

maybe he could...

Throw a party for all BlueNC'ers?
Seems to me we could use one :-)

Sounds like a plan to me!

But since Walter hasn't made his presence evident in our little internet home, I doubt he would consider that. :)

I actually just closed this window a few minutes ago.

I'm still not crazy about the production model they are using, but I liked both the video and the story.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Production model?

Do you mean the website? The video? I'm curious - what is it that you don't like; what would you change?

the video, I'm just not nuts about the way they are produced.

Thinking outside the box

Pretty Innovative.

I thought it was "outside the box" thinking, too.

Candidates often give lip service to the importance of literacy, how much they'll do for families and children, etc. I think this is a case of "show, not tell". I was impressed.
