The Rand Paul litmus test

Senator Burr could have defined himself as a Republican moderate, instead he embraced right wing extremism by paling around with the likes of Art Pope and Tim D'Annunzio and by announcing that it is impossible to "for any candidate to get to the right of me."

I'm glad that Rand Paul has provided us with an opportunity to test that proposition, and that "unapologetic progressive" Elaine Marshall is well positioned to make the most of that opportunity.

The Rand Paul Litmus Test - Suzy Khimm | Mon May. 24, 2010 11:27 AM PDT

Democratic candidates are looking to capitalize on Kentucky Republican Rand Paul’s disastrous entrée into the national spotlight, attempting to link their Republican opponents with Paul's ideological extremism. In North Carolina, Democratic Senate candidate Elaine Marshall has sent an email asking "True or False…Republican Sen. Richard Burr agrees with fellow Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul that he would have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that ended racial segregation.”

The reader has to click through the post in order to get an answer—and, as it turns out, Burr doesn’t seem to have commented on Paul’s controversial remarks. Noting that Burr has promised voters “it is impossible for any candidate to get to the right” of him, the campaign urges Marshall supporters to sign a petition to “force him on the record!”

Though Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans have tried to distance themselves from Paul, Democrats like Marshall are hoping to paint him as a symptom of the party’s rightward shift. Marshall is facing her own primary contest in North Carolina, where she’s competing in a run-off election against Cal Cunningham, the choice of the national Democratic establishment. Having portrayed herself as an unapologetic progressive, Marshall could conceivably benefit from being seen as a foe of Republican extremism. But whether Marshall--or other Democrats outside of Kentucky--will see much benefit from Paul’s running mouth remains to be seen.

Be careful what we wish for

Jerimee I understand what you're doing here but I'm afraid we could open a big ole box of 5th degree of seperation on this one. You see, I have not seen any statements from either Marshall or Cunningham regarding the Easley scandals, Soles scandals, etc. For instance: Does Cunningham support Soles bill lowering retirement age for his buddy Rex Gore, afterall Cunningham and Soles served together in the NC Senate and the same could be said for Marshall who sat on the Council of State with Easley. I'm just being the Devil's Advocate here.

If only....

...there was a decent candidate in the race that wasn't going to rubber stamp Obama's agenda. I have no faith in Cunningham or Marshall to be independent. Kay Hagan has certainly been a disappointment in that area. Cunningham and Marshall need to quit telling me about Burr and start telling me about their plans and how they differ from the insanity currently going on in Washington.

If things don't change, I'll be holding my nose and carrying a barf bucket with me as I vote in November, so be it...I'll be voting for Burr on the grounds I can't trust Marshall or Cunningham.

That's insane

The idea that you'd vote for Bank Run Burr, a Republican Senator who aided and abetted George Bush as he drove America off a cliff, is bizarre beyond words.

Burr is part of the insanity you're complaining about.

In fairness to him...

I voted for Kay Hagan last election (believe it or not, I am reasonable), and I haven't really seen much of an improvement (or, as he put it - independent thought). I'd also estimate that if things were to keep going the same way for the amount of time Burr has been in office, things will have gone downhill at an equally steep slope under Kagan as well.

With that said, I'm done voting the lesser of two evils. I'll be voting Beitler in November.

Yes, he is...

...but he's part of the opposition insanity at the moment. The only time I recall our government functioning in my lifetime was when the white house was controlled by one party and the congress by a difference one.

Seeing as how I doubt Marshall or Cunningham will do anything other than vote the way Reid (if he's still there) or Obama want them to vote...it has to be Burr.

Short Memory and Lack of Facts

I know it is popular to continue to blame Bush for everything bad in America today, but the facts show we probably haven't had a decent president since the days of Andrew Jackson. We can blame the collapse of America on several presidents and failed ideology to include Keynesian economics, Lincoln, Wilson, F.D.R., Johnson, et al.. But the vast majority of the blame rests on the shoulders of the complacent whining electorate that keeps voting for retards to 'take care of us all' so we don't have to deal with the realities of life. It is time to start converting worthless fiat currency into 'real' money and look for another desirable locale to start over. The Titanic is sinking and the sheeple are still arguing over the deck chair arrangement.

You Could 'Write In'

If one felt compelled to waste their precious time and vote with all of the other complacent whiners, then you could always just do a write in. Or you could do as many do today, just vote for the biggest communist you can find on the ballet in order to just get it over with sooner rather than later. Why suffer any longer than we have to? These professional politicians are all the same.
