Is Rep. David Price a progressive?
Submitted by sydfynch on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 12:13pm
David Price seems like a corporate & conservative Democrat to me. Is that accurate? He's not a member of the Progressive House caucus but I'm not very familiar with his philosophies and voting records on progressive issues. Anyone have any resources or opinions on that they can share?
If you would prefer to message me instead of posting, that's fine. If you can't message me through this site, let me know and I'll give you an email address.
Thanks.

Is This a Joke?
David is one of our best progressive leaders in NC. He's been fighting these Tea Party nut cases at every turn and he stood up against the hostage takers by voting against the "debt ceiling deal." He always supported the public option in health care reform. He was the first NC democrat to support the bill to repeal the unconstitutional defense of marriage act, and he's called out our insane general assembly Rs for discriminating against lgbt north carolinians. The list goes on and on and on, education, protecting the environment, holding the Tea Party's feet to the fire etc. When I lived in NC I was always proud to pull the lever for David because he fights for progressive values.
Solid progressive
I agree with Anonymous. David Price is no firebrand or lightning rod, that's for sure, but he votes for the common good 99% of the time.
Yeah
If he doesn't count as progressive, then no one representing NC in Washington does.
On LGBT equality issues he tends to be number 1 in the state, followed by Miller.
That;'s why I asked.
Not trying to start a fight, geez. That's why I asked, because I'm trying to get to know his politics better.

Price is good, Miller is better
If this is a question about who is more progressive in a likely Brad Miller vs. David Price primary matchup due to redistricting, the clear answer is Brad Miller.
Of course, one or both candidates could choose to run outside the districts in which they live. There is no requirement that Congressmen reside in the district they represent. THAT'S A STRONG HINT TO BOTH MILLER AND PRICE.

Last year I looked up the congressmen who had sponsored or voted in favor of LGBT equality initiatives. At the time Price seemed to be in the lead followed closely by Miller and Watt.
Has Miller come around on DOMA, or did I miss something when I looked him up last year?
I know campaign finance reform, especially in the light of Citizens United, is another important issue to me. I see Price as a cosponsor, but not Brad Miller.

We need more candidates like both of these guys across the state. Are you suggesting the each switch districts from their current home districts, or that they run against each other?
I hope they don't run against each other because I'd hate to lose either. But given Price's incredible strength in providing constituent services for many years I don't see him having any trouble winning re-election.
I have wondered how two progressives running against each other and being on the primary ballot would play with the amendment. I think if its on the current maps focused on the triangle area then it probably helps turn out progressives voting against the amendment - which could be the case because in the past legal challenges have delayed the implementation of new maps. If its done on the new maps then its hard to say with that snake tail jetting to the south all the way down to part of Fayetteville which brings in more rural and military voters. But with the legal challenges to the new maps it's all up in the air I guess.
Congressman Price voted
Congressman Price voted against the Patriot Act the last time around.. That's makes him a real Patriot and a Great American..
You can get to voting records and other info

Price also filed a friend of the court brief against Citizen's United. Something that won't show up on his voting record, but was another nice statement.
Since he is on Appropriations, it would be a shame for NC to lose his seniority. That gives him more leverage both for NC and to make deals to get more progressive points into legislation.
Though how a congressman avoids being somewhat corporate with this:

I just don't know. And yes, article cites Dem. leadership, not just Republicans. I wonder what he was asked to contribute for being on Appropriations Committee.
