Rep. Faison says Gov. Perdue should step aside, not run for re-election

"[Bill Faison]

apparently didn't know that Perdue’s campaign announced in Nov. 2010 she would run for re-election. But he was unfazed.

“I’d like to see you go to Governor Perdue today and ask her if she’s announcing for governor of the state,” he answered [Laura Leslie of WRAL]. “‘Cause I don’t believe you’ll get an answer that says she is. But you might. I think you should go over and ask her.”

Perdue campaign manager Fiona Conroy was quick to respond to the question.

“The governor is running for re-election. Period. She said so publicly months ago and that has not changed. Fundraising is going very well. We are organizing our campaign team, and we are preparing for the campaign ahead.”

“Unequivocally, the governor IS running for re-election,” confirmed campaign consultant Marc Farinella. “Nothing has changed...”

Step aside, Perdue. Now.

While Rep. Faison isn't my ideal candidate for the job, he has the correct message.

This truth needs to be said more often and loudly by all NC Democrats.

Step aside, Perdue.

Polling has never been on Perdue's side. And the campaign finance issue isn't going to be put to rest in enough time to distance it from the election.

Perdue and campaign staff, quit siphoning money that the rest of the party needs and announce that you are not running today.

NC Democrats, where does Perdue help your poll numbers? In what districts or regions? Is it anywhere you don't already poll well? I didn't think so.

Now compare that to where she pulls you down. Open your eyes.

Get her to drop out of the 2012 elections solely to save yourselves if for no other reason -- namely, having a snowball's chance of keeping the governor's mansion next year.

Not so fast

I don't like everything Perdue has done ... for example, she didn't veto nearly enough crap coming from the NCGOP. But she has my full support going into the next cycle. If Faison wants to take her on, let him prove himself in a primary. Let him prove he can raise the money and turn out the votes.

Truth is, I don't think he stands a chance of beating her, a fact he seems to understand. So why on earth would you think he can beat Myers Park Pat, who will have the full backing of Duke Energy, Progress Energy, and every other Big Energy company in North America.

As one candidate said to me recently, "Don't compare me to the Almighty, compare me to the alternative."

Faison could have been out beating the bushes about jobs 12 months ago, but didn't until he got the governor's mansion in his sights. Was he a lightning rod and a pot-stirrer and a cheerleader when the legislature was in session? I must have missed it.

It's not about Faison. It's about what he is saying.

Specifically, that Perdue should step aside for the good of the party. And he's right.

I'm no Faison fan, although he was stirring the pot earlier this year.

But I am put off by folks like Rep. Rick Glazier and Rep. Tricia Cotham dancing around the Superintendent of Public Instruction race just to stay out of Perdue's clumsy way.

Glazier/Cotham, run for governor. There's no need to wait for "your turn." Perdue has already lost.

I would love to see a Governor Glazier or Governor Cotham. Come on down, folks! The time is now.

A big honking primary

would be a very good thing for the progressive agenda in North Carolina. Seriously. We NEED primaries at all levels. Defining a new breed / brand of independent Democrats is essential. A primary would help do that. It would also turn out voters to stop Amendment One.

  • The year of primary challenges
  • A battle-royale of the sexes

I'd bet on women.

Kevin Siers skewers Gov. Perdue in Charlotte Observer 'toon

Check out Siers' wonderful take on the Guv on the editorial page of today's Charlotte Observer. He is a marvelous caricature master, and this is one of his best.

Also, watch for Laura Leslie on the six o'clock news at WRAL TV or online at www.WRAL.com for the latest on Gov. Perdue versus Governor wannabe Rep. Faison.

Martha Brock

That's pretty funny.

Maybe he should do a series.

Myers Park Pat McCrory would be easy pickings. Pun intended.

How can there be any question?

I'm so out of it.

I'm been assuming there's no question that Perdue will veto SB 9. So why do I get an email from NCCM encouraging me to contact her? It the veto really uncertain?

This is a no brainer.

More groups calling for veto?

WTF Bev? It is a waste of our time and your political capital to have this issue open for debate. Veto the god-forsaken bill now.

Yeah, it has to be a no brainer

I wonder if there is value to drawing out the time as much as possible before vetoing, since as we know any vetoed bill can be overridden at any time when they're aren't enough dems around b/c of the parliamentary trick used to keep them in the veto garage. No idea what's going on with this, but that was a thought that crossed my mind, don't know if its realistic or not?

Where does Faison stand on marriage equality?

n/t

No idea

But he actually voted against the amendment in the House, in contrast to Perdue's weeks-late "marriage is one man..." statement.

Yeah, but she

also said she'll vote against this amendment personally when she has the chance, so it feels like a wash to me, on that issue, unless I know more about where Rep Faison stands and why he voted that way.

Pat certainly wont sign into law LGBT inclusive anti-bullying bills or veto the things that Perdue has vetoed like the Voter Suppression Act. While shes a long way from perfect, I'd need to know what ways Faison is better before considering throwing support behind someone without the advantage of incumbency and name recognition. If he's pro-marriage equality and willing to say that in public, that's a good start. Is he I wonder?

Don't support Perdue because of LGBT issues

...because she and her administration are the reason you're facing this amendment in May.

I've said I'm not a Faison fan already on this blog.

But Perdue is absolutely NOT supportive of LGBT issues. Signing the bullying bill (without a signing ceremony, mind you) is not the test of being LGBT supportive.

Most breathing Democrats and some breathing GOPers would have signed the bullying bill or let it become law without their signature.

Support Perdue if you feel you must, but don't say it's because of LGBT issues.

Perdue announcing vs her staff

Bill Faison asked whether or not the Governor would announce, not her staff. The Wilmington 2010 statement was unofficial and a year ago. A few weeks ago on Flashpoint, the Governor was asked by Dave Wagner about running and there was NO direct answer. Listen to it.

Bill's point is "Will she announce?" not "Will her campaign announce?"

How is it that a campaign is at arm's length when there are problems but are the voice of the candidate when announcing?

If she is running, she can announce, yes? And that will end this ...
