The GOP in North Carolina is exceptionally homophobic, populated and run by bigots with fossilized thinking. It's not surprising, then, that the first openly gay judge on the NC Court of Appeals, John Arrowood, is facing an anti-gay attack by his opponent Bob Hunter's supporters. Arrowood was appointed by outgoing governor Mike Easley back in August of 2007, to fill an unexpired term, and is up for election this year.
Judge Arrowood is also on the board of Equality NC, and that drew special attention in the hysterical homobigoted appeal.
Bob Hunter, a conservative Republican from Greensboro, has filed to take on John Arrowood in that race for the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
This race is crucial for conservatives however, as the incumbent Arrowood, is a homosexual activist appointed by Gov. Mike Easley, when elected conservative Eric Levinson resigned his post to go to Iraq to help build their judicial system.
A former board member of the group, Equality NC, Arrowood is strongly supported by the group which advocates for extreme liberal issues concerning the "gay, lesbian, and transgender community". Some issues are so offensive, they cannot be discussed here.
Arrowood is not merely running as a leftist, but as a homosexual leftist that could rule negatively on opinions that North Carolina families hold dear.
Oh, yeah, extreme and offensive issues such as advocating passage of an anti-bullying in public schools bill, or non-discrimination in state employment laws, or extend existing state hate crimes statutes to include sexual orientation and gender identity. That radical agenda.
But wait, it gets better, the Hunter supporter, tries the old "but I'm not homophobic" mantra before launching into more anti-gay bleating. Read and be appalled:
While your blogger has nothing personally against gays and does not care what they do as consenting adults, she does care about Equality NC's attempts to tie homosexual desires onto the civil rights causes hard fought by black Americans. This is just wrong! Our fellow Americans were long persecuted as they fought to receive equal treatment under the law and the gay lobby unfairly has tried to hitch it's wagon to their plight! These gay militants want to be able to be married, just as heterosexuals are, and that personally offends this blogger.
Sigh. The appeal to the most base instincts of voters is getting truly tiring. It's like they have a Mad Libs book of homophobia that they fill in the blanks to and hit the "send" or "publish" button.
You should read the NCGOP's platform section on "Family." There isn't any wiggle room for the poor Log Cabin folks here in the state. Their party hates them:
Homosexual behavior is not normal and should not be taught as acceptable in public education or in public policy.Public schools should not be used to teach children that homosexual behavior is normal.Taxpayers should not fund benefit plans for unmarried partners. We support federal and state constitutional amendments to ensure that marriage is limited to the union of one man and one woman. We oppose the adoption or foster parenting of children by same sex couples.
Mike Nelson, the first openly gay person to be elected as a mayor of a North Carolina city (he served five terms -- the longest tenure in Carrboro’s history), said this about the effort.
I've known John Arrowood a long time. He's an excellent jurist and a fine leader. John's running for election this year to retain his seat on the NC Court of Appeals, and he needs our help to fight off homophobic attacks from people like this.
...If we don't stand up for candidates like Judge John Arrowood when they need us, then we will only be handing a victory to the other side. These kind of homophobic attacks from right-wing zealots cannot be allowed to allowed to succeed.
The NC GOP is in line with Pastor Huckabee on sanctity of life measures. Many of the moderate Republicans migrating to the state have discovered that they don't have a home with the NCGOP either. The ground is shifting, and the far-right in NC knows they are becoming increasingly marginalized as pocketbook issues are driving issues, not tired bigoted appeals like this, and that the social conservatives are the dinosaurs out there that many voters in NC are tired of listening to. We thankfully elect Dem governors and have a Dem-controlled General Assembly to hold the Republican fossils in check, but it takes a lot of support for LGBT groups like ENC to lobby and counter right wing spin (and there's not a lack of that nonsense).
