Scenes from a pacifist's nightmare

Just for the heck of it, I decided to attend the "Restore the Constitution" open-carry rally in Greensboro today:

I wasn't the only unarmed person around, but we were in a distinct minority, to say the least.

I spotted a few of Greensboro's finest monitoring events from their rapid response (getaway) vehicles:

Lots of Tea Party "Don't Tread on Me" flags flapping:

And lots of assault rifles. More than I expected to see, for sure:

And here's Bubba. I won't dwell too much on him, other than to say, "The boy ain't right." What speaking skills he lacked he made up for (in spades) with venom and loudness:

And for you folks interested in General Assembly races, here's Glen Bradley, who has (believe it or not) taken the lead in the District 49 race:

Here's a shot of Bradley's hardware. At least the kids are petting the dog...

Before I left, I chatted for a few moments with B.J. Lawson. Ideological differences aside, B.J. is a really nice guy.

He is a nice guy

who has turned himself into a libertian pretzel sprinkled with tea bagger salt, pardon my half baked metaphor.

What was he packing ... or was he just a poser?

I'm pretty sure he was

sans-weapons, but I only gave him a little shoulder pat of encouragement, as opposed to a genuine frisk. ;)

Ah, I was wondering how that had gone off

(no pun intended) thank you for braving the heat (no pun intended) and getting some good shots too (no pun intended)

:-)

Progressives are the true conservatives.

Such a sucker

I'm am such a sucker for puns.

Yes, he is a nice guy ...

Like so many libertarians, he actually supports limited government ... until he doesn't: his support of limited government power ends with abortion because, you see, he's a doctor and has seen abortions and doesn't like them the way we liberals do, so, you know, government can intervene here.

(For the sarcasm-impaired, no one likes abortions, liberals included. That's not the point.)

I wonder where he stands on gay marriage....

BTW when I asked him if he carried a gun, he refused to answer.

Opposed

is what he told me when I asked him after a debate in the last election cycle.

I wonder where he stands on gay marriage....

lol

I love how scharrison says (emphasis mine):

Ideological differences aside, B.J. is a really nice guy.

...and then the next two people go off about his ideological differences, and then seemingly getting angry that he could then be perceived as a nice guy.

Right, because you guys never

challenge what people say in their diaries here...

Get over yourself

Many of us know BJ, having met him at various events, including my house. He is a good egg, there's nothing to debate about that. We like him just fine.

Just because someone has sold out his political soul doesn't mean he's not a nice guy.

I've even heard Art Pope is a nice guy, and I'm sure that's true. But that doesn't earn him a pass on being a scourge in terms of politics.

But

where are the brown people? Oh, never mind.

I suggested to some of my black friends

that they attend fully armed. They didn't seem to have much trust in local law enforcement.

I counted about three,

out of what was probably somewhere between 250-300 people.

I've also met and spoken with BJ several times over the last few years.

He's been showing up at Hillsborough's fantastic Last Friday on the run up to the election - and has certainly been more visible than David (I think a shoo-in still should get out and meet folks outside the Dem apparatus).

I suggest folks drop by his table to pickup the handy pocket-sized Constitution his campaign distributes - every home (and Congress critter) can use a few!

Wonder what would happen

...if there was a Second Amendment Progressives open-carry rally?

Some of these folks are making erroneous assumptions about progressives.

The styling of the "assault rifles" is cute but more conventional hunting weapons are equivalent--without the heavy macho war-peacock vibes.

And probably pacifist hunters as well.

We wouldn't see...

Well you can be fairly certain that you probably wouldn't see any handguns at a progressive 2nd amendment rally :-)

For some reason, that reminded me of this article from the Onion. The picture that accompanies the article is one of my favorites.

Handguns

You might be right. Unless someone brought out their silver-plated, engraved Colt with the pearl handle just for show.

The Onion article is good.

I think the conventional wisdom about passive progressives is mistaken. All sorts of people are progressives. It's easy in liberal strongholds to imagine that every progressive is just like you. There are progressives no doubt in all 100 counties; it is the proportion of them in the population that makes the difference in voting patterns.

What the GOPublican Second Amendment campaign misses is that adding more guns in cities doesn't reduce urban crime.

Now that they have gotten their way with the Supreme Court, it is up to progressives to deal with the fear and feeling of powerlessness that drives gun sales "for protection". And to deal with the romantic cache that owning a gun has for some teens.

Thanks for the video

From his remarks, it appears Bubba was asleep for the eight years of the Bush presidency. I do agree with one thing he said though. That shock collar would have come in handy.

No, Buuba was in DC with

No, Buuba was in DC with Gathering of Eagles surrounding the moonbats "Code Pink" form protesting out troops during the Bush years. Pleas visit "What Bubba Knows" blog at http://www.whatbubbaknows.com/

I think James was referring to

Bubba's lack of concern back when the Bush Administration was engaged in the systematic dismantling of civil liberties, such as warrantless wiretapping, the streamlining of search & seizure procedures by police, giving his bureaucracy carte blanche to do whatever they wanted without having to worry about that pesky Congressional oversight, etc.

You know, real threats to liberty, as opposed to ideological fantasies. If Bubba had spoken up then, more people might be ready to listen to him now.

Yes, THAT Glen Bradley...

To be fair, when Bush was still in office and proposed the TARP banker bailout, I stood in several locations throughout Raleigh, including Crabtree Mall, and Capitol Blvd inside the 401 split with an 8 foot sign reading, "No welfare for billionaires, vote the bums out!". Bubba came up to me and read me the riot act, screaming at me that I should be supporting Bush, and that this would harm McCain. I responded that Bush was some kind of monster who spit on the Constitution, that McCain was as bad or worse than Bush and that I'd sooner shoot myself in the head than support that man. After some 30 minutes of arguing, Bubba never got violent, muttered something nasty about Ron Paul, complimented me for standing up for my principles even if (to his mind) I was dead wrong, and left.

The fact that I was out there protesting Bush's failed policies as much as I now protest Obama's failed policies, has not exactly won me any friends amongst the Progressives, however, as the woefully distorted article at the ProgressivePulse would seem to indicate: http://pulse.ncpolicywatch.org/2010/08/17/this-explains-a-lot-of-things/

Here I was in September 2009, protesting Bush's TARP policy, which earned the fervent ire of Bubba, and no friends but fellow Ron Paulers and my own peace of mind: http://i37.tinypic.com/2j11jpk.jpg

A copy of the sign up sheet

A copy of the sign up sheet for this rally including addresses would be a great asset for a B & E specialist. Personally I'd rather the bad guys were not aware of what I have in my house.

Ummm... WRONG.

Sorry - but that's just wrong, Wrong WRONG.

The cities with the strictest gun laws - DC, NYFC, Chicago - also have the highest crime rates.

The question is not "more guns" - as you can see, there are plenty of guns in these cities - but rather more guns IN THE HANDS OF LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS.

As it stands now, only the outlaws have guns -- and know they can prey with impunity on anyone except another criminal.

When you encourage good people to arm themselves, the predator-class must then stop to consider the odds that any potential victim may fight back - and might even kill them!

It only takes one sheepdog to protect a whole bunch of sheep - in this case it only takes a few sheep with fangs to make the wolves think twice.

Put another way, this protects us in the same way the "herd effect" helps protect unvaccinated kids.

Check out John Lott's EXCELLENT book "More Guns - Less Crime." It should dispel any remaining false ideas you may have in this regard.

Your Communism is Showing Again

Could somebody please enlighten me as to why People walking around with weapons (inanimate objects) is somehow blog-worthy? Seriously, when y'all post nonsense like this, your nationalist socialist/communist ideology really shines like a spot light. At least be honest with yourselves and quit calling yourselves "liberal" or "progressive" because you clearly aren't. OMG, look at all those "evil" people with guns!!! What a joke!

Congratulations

You've reached a new low for constructive commentary, and have moved within one small step of violating our only community standard of behavior, the "intolerably obnoxious" standard.

If you can't say something useful, please go away.
