Shut Up, Hillary
In last night's debate, the candidates were asked if they would meet with countries like Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, etc. Obviously, the sensible answer to this question is "yes." We have gained nothing by following the Bush administration's strategy of pouting in the corner, and we have nothing to lose by engaging our enemies. This is essentially how Barack Obama answered the question.
Sen. Clinton responded that no, she would not promise to meet with these leaders. A second or so later, she added that she would make an effort to meet with them, but she would have to be sure that the meetings were undertaken in good faith. Presumably, this means Kim Jong Il won't be mean or something.
Now, when I heard her say that, I was kind of confused. Why would she go out of her way to add this condition? Obviously, the condition was implicit in the question - no President would meet with any foreign leader if they didn't think they had good intentions. It kind of goes without saying that Presidents only meet with foreign leaders when they know that said leaders want to have constructive dialogue. I naively thought that Clinton had just answered the question clumsily, probably overthought it.
Today's attack has shed quite a bit of light on the question of why she answered the way she did. She's gone after Obama, calling him "irresponsible" and "naive", because he didn't spell out the conditions of the meetings in his answer. Now I understand - this is right out of the Clinton playbook. See, now Clinton has created an artificial distinction and put some space between herself and Obama. This fits in well with her strategy of appealing to "Very Serious People", while painting Obama as flavor-of-the-month, an unproven rookie.
Why does this piss me off? After all, I'm an Edwards guy. Because it breaks my important rule regarding primaries: thou shalt not give the GOP ammo against our eventual nominee. Any primary contest is bound to have some disputes and disagreements. We want the candidates to draw distinctions and make their case. But we must not feed media narratives that could hurt other candidates in a general election campaign. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Hillary Clinton has done. She's playing into the number one narrative that the Republicans would use against Obama in the general: that he's a lightweight without the experience needed in a commander-in-chief. Clinton knows that this narrative isn't true, that any of our top tier candidates would be a great commander-in-chief. She chose to use this narrative to help her campaign - at the expense of our party. The last thing we need is Democrats issuing rhetorical attacks on other Democrats and weakening our party brand. So, for now, just shut up, Hillary.

My sentiments exactly.
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
It was a fine answer
I don't share your outrage, phoenixdem. It was simply a better answer. And Obama attacked Hillary, too. No big deal.
I don't think that the Republicans will need Hillary's help to find ways to attack any Democrat they want.
And the harder issues they handle now, before many Americans are paying attention, the better they'll all be later on.
BTW, I'm an Edwards guy, too.
And, I loved last night's debate!

Shut Up, Hillary
Reality check here, phoenixdem...
Get used to her insider body-blows and counter-punches to Edwards, Obama,
et al... she plays hard-ball always... this powerful woman will be the dem-crat nominee -- and president/elect in '08...
47% of the voters will vote Hillary (including phoenixdem and zabouti) because the Red choice is totally unacceptable... 47% of the voters will never vote for Hillary because she is satan incarnate... that leaves the task of getting 4 of the remaining 6% to vote "Rodham in '08" to the DNC, the well-oiled Clinton money machine, and the drive-by media... piece of cake!
Edwards may make a splash in Iowa and NH, but will be toast by the Ides of March, and will return to Tara and more multi-million $$ health care and global warming lawsuits against corporate America...
Pressure from the Democratic base may place Obama in the VP position (not
Hillary's first choice) - or he may stay outside the Rodham White House, learn
his lessons well, and succeed in the 2016 race...
Richardson wants to be VP but may have to settle for SecState...
Biden and Dodd will remain tenured, peter-principled senators until they retire
to finally be president - of something - perhaps universities in their home states.
That is enough reality for now.
wow
So this will be the first open nomination in history where every candidate ends up where they started? Should be one for the history books.

Actually some polls suggest 51% WON'T
vote for her under any circumstances.
That's a big hill to overcome.

someone be running those numbers through the RNC servers as well?
Hello? Ohio? How did that work again?
You have the right idea. Check out the link below ...
... to see how the most recent numbers break down. You might also bop around the site a bit to see that Hillary currently beats all Rep candidates by outside the MOE.

This debate was the first time
that I actually thought I could live with Ms. Clinton at the top of the ticket. I think it would make it extremely difficult for other Democrats in NC - particularly if we ever field a candidate to take on Elizabeth Dole.
I was not as impressed with Edwards' responses as some here were. He did not seem to answer the questions as directly as some of the other candidates. I think that Obama did better at that than most of them. I was more impressed with him than any of them.

I won't vote for her. Ever. I don't care whose ticket she's on.
Abstain.

He ain't winnin' anyway.
Yeah?
I never thought he'd win the mayoral race in NYC, but he did. Then again, I never thought GWB would win the presidential race.
