Super Bowl ad response: We trust women

We’ve written twice on our blog, Choice 2.0, about the anti-choice ad that CBS will air during Sunday’s Super Bowl that is being bankrolled by the ultra-conservative evangelical organization, Focus on the Family. The ad will feature University of Florida player Tim Tebow and his mom, Pam. If you’ve managed to miss the background on the controversy so far, get caught up here and here.

It’s too bad that so many people are missing the point when it comes to the content of this ad and the difficult situation that Pam Tebow found herself in. In fact, her story is a powerful one, and it rests on the fact that a woman, Pam Tebow, made an important personal and medical decision on her own, after receiving counsel from medical professionals. She made the right decision for herself and her family.

The Tebows’ story is compelling, and central to it is the fact that we must respect the ability of each woman to make important medical decisions for herself and her family. Fortunately, this point has not been lost on everyone.

This week, a powerful video produced by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America was released on Youtube featuring college and pro football player, Sean James, and Olympic Gold Medalist, Al Joyner. You can also watch the video at Choice 2.0 and be spared the predictably annoying Youtube comments.

I consider this a “must-see” because it’s just so powerful to hear these two amazing athletes talk about the world they want to see for their daughters. That world is a place where everyone’s decisions are respected and where everyone believes that (to quote Sean James) “women are strong and wise” and that “only women can make the best decisions about their health and their future.” Am I the only one tearing up?

In a just a little over a minute James and Joyner really sum up the major reasons that so many of us are pro-choice. When (or if) you see the Tim Tebow ad this Super Bowl Sunday just think back to this video and remember that Pam Tebow had the ability to make the best decision for her and her family… and so too should the rest of us.

In other news, I think the Saints have won over my support in this Super Bowl. Not being a big sports fan, here’s why.

And, this is what "Choice" is all about

PPCNC, you have hit the nail on the head here. Just SO many far right conservatives believe that if a person is pro-Choice, it means they think all women should abort their babies. What you have said here is just so perfect:

...remember that Pam Tebow had the ability to make the best decision for her and her family… and so too should the rest of us.

It is a CHOICE. And, in the VAST majority of the cases, women CHOOSE to take their baby to full term and not to abort.

Thanks. Just perfect.

I wish I had missed the controversy

Guess we just have to fight them head-to-head. You should include links to your contributions page.

Contributions page

Thanks, James! That is a great and really helpful suggestion. Anyone who would like to make a donation (even as little as $5) can go here. You can also specify if you'd like your contribution to go to local, national, international Planned Parenthood or where it is most needed.

The video is fabulous

Please spread it far and wide.

It is a good video...but

James, this video is extremely well done and the two speakers are well spoken and notable in their own right. But (and you knew the "but" was coming), many folks that would watch it would think it is more a video about family than about Choice and a woman's right to choose when it comes to the issue of abortion. You and I, most certainly, know what is being said here. But, your average Joe or Jane? Well, yeah, some of them will see it, but in my considered opinion, it doesn't go right to the issue but seems to kind of "dance around" it.

Again, you and I know what is being said. My point is that you and I are an exception in America when it comes to the mainstream populace.

You're right

but this feels like a new strategic front in the long war. "We trust women" is a winning move. Upon reflection, I wish it had been added in to the closing frame - and maybe upfront.

I trust women is my new mantra.

For sure

You know me by now. I'm right in there with ya, my man.

Choice

Choice is what this should be all about. It seems as if the media is trying to make it about abortion or no abortion. God gave us free will and the right to use it. I think the story is very powerful but yet nobody has seen the commercial. online casino
