Anti-Marriage Amendment

Still no answer

We close the year as we started it, with one of the nation's largest public companies refusing to fight against laws that make gays and lesbians second-class citizens. CEO Jim Rogers has declined every opportunity to say that Duke Energy will not give campaign contributions to marriage bigots like Pat McCrory. At least we now know where the company stands: squarely against equality and fairness.

Kudos to Pullen Baptist!

It's almost enough to make me wish I was still a Baptist.

Almost.

Bob Orr finally weighs in on anti-marriage amendment: Says approximately nothing

Thank god NCCU chose to keep its distance from Mr. Orr and the Show. I wonder if never ending equivocation is in his NCICL job description.

What should Bev say?

NCPW reports that Governor Perdue will have something to say on the anti-marriage amendment.

On a separate note, Governor Bev Perdue told reporters Wednesday that she will speak publicly about her position on the amendment later this week.

I'm sure the Governor's staff would love to hear your thoughts about what she should say.

Save the date!

Explosion of lies and hypocrisy at bigots' amendment press conference

With the state still recovering from Irene, a string of severe storms last night, and massive unemployment, these two NC GOP leaders decide it would be a great time to hold a press conference on ... gay marriage.

What legislator said this last month? "To me, the constitution gives you rights.”

Senator Ellie Kinniard (D-Orange); former Mayor of Carrboro
25% (2 votes)
Representative Marcus Brandon (D-Guilford); first openly gay member of NC House
25% (2 votes)
Senator Richard Stevens (R-Wake); a rare Republican that did not sponsor the Does-Nothing-About-Divorce amendment last session
25% (2 votes)
Representative Stephen LaRoque (R-Lenoir); House Rules Co-Chairman and co-sponsor of the Does-Nothing-About-Divorce amendment
13% (1 vote)
Representative Mitchell Setzer (R-Catawba); often an early co-sponsor of the Does-Nothing-About-Divorce amendment
13% (1 vote)

The cost of bigotry idiocy

If NC state Senator Jim Forrester had his way, North Carolina taxpayers would be over $5 million poorer this November.

As he does every legislative session, Senator Forrester filed a bill this past February to write discrimination into the state constitution -- even though marriage equality is already banned by state statute.

Well, the Fiscal Research Division determined that holding such a referendum in November 2009 -- as Senator Forrester proposed -- would cost the state's taxpayers over $5.7 million.

Rowan County Democrats vs. Wyoming Republicans

Quick, which is more cowardly and bigoted? Democratic Rowan County Commissioners or Republicans in the Wyoming House of Representatives?

If you thought blue state North Carolina Democrats had one up on Dick Cheney's home state Wyoming red-red-red Republicans, you'd be wrong.

Last night, the Rowan County Commission voted for a meaningless resolution concerning writing discrimination into the state constitution via a so-called marriage amendment.

Reading the link, you'll note that the cowardly Democrats on the county commission voted for this toothless nonsense. You might ask where was the resolution about divorce, or funding for marriage counseling, or myriad other questions.

I'm asking why North Carolina Democratic County Commissioners don't have the same level of sense as Wyoming Republicans.
