BlueNC Women on Wednesdays

Heroes of the highest order

The NC General Assembly presented two bills to the Governor's office yesterday, 03 April 2007. They are important for everyone, though unlike other Legislative actions, one wishes that the special interest group these laws serve were much smaller than it is.

Tax and Financial Services

"The mission of Financial Services is to provide comprehensive financial services, to ensure accountability and to protect the County's assets. This office is established and defined by the NC > Local Government Budget and Fiscal Control Act (NCGS 159).

Margaret Johnson, Walking the Talk

Today's live blog with Margaret Johnson has been postponed. But we do plan to reschedule.

In 2006, Polk County elected the first Democrats to the county commission in 12 years, the first Democratic sheriff in 8 years. Just as impressive, they turned around 700-vote deficit in their 2004 congressional race to a 1200-vote margin of victory.

County Democratic Party Chair Margaret Johnson attributes the turnaround to "walking the talk about what it means to be a democrat." She says, "Our party is becoming not just about elections but about our community. And we are doing good in our community. We are making a difference." Current community activities include road-side pick-ups, services for the needy, and fund-raising walks for conservation. "Even Republicans come up to me and say I may not agree with your politics but I sure like what you're doing."

Broken Pavement - Remix -

Pavement.

My little two lane paved cowpath is currently being used by tandem dumptrucks working on the 70 Bypass project.

It's coming apart. The county was out here twice - maybe three times yesterday - for the same hole. Right at the end of my neighbors driveway. It's funny. They patch it...here comes a truck....rrrrip...there goes the patch. Over and over and over.

Last week they patched a blow out bigger than my truck!

They came back three more times. Each time with a bigger truck. Finally, they decided to fix it right.

Buncombe County Commissioner Carol Peterson denies secret meetings

Evades question on alternatives,

health consequences, lack of public input;

Calls the Woodfin power plant "a good decision"

{Carol agreed to the interview as part of my "Women in Power" series for BlueNC's Women on Wednesdays. The videos were uploaded Saturday. On Sunday, she called to ask me to "pull" the ones referring to the Progress Energy Woodfin plant. I offered to correct any inaccuracies either in print or by video. She has not responded.}

In her courthouse office last Tuesday, Buncombe County Commission Vice Chair Carol Peterson insisted she and fellow commissioners did not meet secretly with Progress Energy before unanimously approving a $72 million diesel-fired power plant.

BlueNC WoW Returns Next Week - Open Thread

The women of BlueNC will return to the front page next Wednesday, April 5. We decided to reschedule today's WoW due to the instability of the site. While it is working pretty good right now, I was worried we could lose it at some point during the day.

However, We have some banners to try out in preparation for next week. We will situate one banner at the top of the page for the entire day and one banner will be sized down and will headline each post, much the way we do the "Breaking" and "Exclusive" banners. I can resize these to make sure they don't break the page.

Enjoy
