Boylan Tries to Make His Mark Early

A while back, Momo took us on a tour of Jackson Hamlet, a small Black community surrounded by Pinehurst and Aberdeen but not in either's municipal limits. They, along with a similar community on the other side of Aberdeen, Midway, have been trying to obtain municipal services, especially water and/or sewer.

Without going too deeply into why these communities are surrounded by, but not in, municipal borders, it comes down to historic settlement patterns, NC annexation law, and the high costs of utilities extensions among other things.

Much progress has occurred lately and it appears Midway will be getting services soon thanks to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) obtained by Aberdeen. Midway will soon be part of Aberdeen, through voluntary or involuntary annexation.

Republican Cat Fight in Moore

This morning's edition of the Pilot has a very interesting article about an on-going fight in the Moore County Republican party.

Boylan Backer Seeks Ouster of GOP Officials is the title of the piece...One of state Rep.-elect Joe Boylan's supporters is seeking the ouster of several local GOP officials he says are loyal to state Rep. Richard Morgan and Manila "Bud" Shaver, referring to them as "traitors," "evil" and "a cancer."
Ed Kennedy is circulating a petition that calls for the state party to strip them of their leadership positions. He is working with Evelyn Hill, Sandhills Community College Trustee Ralph Redmond and several others.

The petition names all the supporters of Manilla Shaver who hold a position in the Moore County Republican party and seeks to remove them from their seats within the party.

Moore County Three Way

On Monday, October 23, 2006, voters in Moore County - NC House district 52, were given another opportunity to hear the views of the candidates in that unusual three-way race. The forum was held at Sandhills Community College, sponsored by the Pilot, and Muirfield Broadcasting. It will be shown on our local cable channel many times over the next two weeks. I urge all of you in the viewing area who can pick up "Channel 3" from Southern Pines to watch this one.

Among the high points of the evening - Republican Joe Boylan announced that if elected to the NC House of Representatives in November, he would move quickly to solve the biggest social problem facing Moore County today - gay marriage. Read more about it!

Will Joe Boylan Represent Moore County?

I have been doing some research on Joe Boylan. After attending the debate between Boylan, Galloway and Shaver, there was something he said that piqued my interest.

“I believe that most of my contributions have come from individuals.” To find out if this was correct, I went to the State Board of Elections (SBOE) website. They have this really nifty tool there, “View Campaign Finance Reports”. You just fill in a name and go to their disclosure reports.

The “individual” contributions do in fact out number the PAC and "other" contributions. Let’s look a little closer. His total individual contributions add up to $77,933.59, of that sum only $19,091.52 were donated by Moore County residents.
