Dr. James Dobson, having playing one-eyed Mullah Omar to the Bush administration, is riding his pale horse into the election here in NC-11. In today's latest glossy mailing, Dr. Dobson writes, "Two years ago, I strongly endorsed Congressman Charles H. Taylor for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. I am doing so again this year, and I hope you will join me in supporting him."

This is same Dr. Dobson who last year said,

"I heard a minister the other day talking about the great injustice and evil of the men in white robes, the Ku Klux Klan, that roamed the country in the South, and they did great wrong to civil rights and to morality. And now we have black-robed men, and that's what you're talking about."

Give Shuler a chance in Congress

U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor represents himself as a paragon of mountain values who has used his power in Congress to help the 11th Congressional District.

But the accumulation of questions over his 16 years of service raises questions as to whether he is serving himself first or his district.

A list of questionable actions includes improper loans at Blue Ridge Savings Bank that led to prison sentences for the bank president and two others, failure to file necessary paperwork for a Jackson County property tax break, campaign donations from Jack Abramoff, the convicted influence peddler; and earmarks turned up by the Wall Street Journal that seemed to help his business interests while also serving the district.

Maybe someone else has already posted this link, but I just watched a campaign ad on Google Video claiming that Charles Taylor was the pro-environmental candidate in the 11th district race!!!! The "logic" was that Taylor had "stopped" the forest service land sale - so this ad's shameless opportunism might explain his rather surprising opposition to selling off federal lands (which he is otherwise diametrically opposed to the mere existence of!) earlier this year. I wonder how many other Republicans in forested districts are also claiming that they "stopped" Bush's land sale?

On a related note, I presume this bald-faced lie of an ad ran on Asheville's main TV station WLOS? That station happens to be owned by the Sinclair group, a corporation that achieved notoriety in the 2004 elections for its extremely biased support of President Bush. Apparently they go so far as to insert snippets of Sinclair/Republican propaganda into the regular ABC news broadcasts! To follow up on a previous post concerning the scuttled Taylor/Shuler debate:

In an article that first appeared online on Friday (10/13) and on the front page of the print edition on Saturday (10/14), the Asheville Citizen-Times had essentially (and unfairly) attacked Heath Shuler for doing something that tens of thousands of people throughout the 11th District do as well.

The reason for the attack? Shuler and his family obeyed the 4th (or 3rd, depending on your faith) Commandment:

Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy.

After a one-week "mid-season hiatus" where the boys in the editing room decided to put together a Hal Needham-style "blooper reel" rather than assemble an entire episode (the evidence of which can be seen here), WNCNN, Western North Carolina's source for God Fearin' News is back with their fourth episode!

In it, our hard-hitting news team delves into Congressman Charles Taylor's behind-the-scenes fundraising activities, and catches a true act of desperation on camera.
