Spy vs. spy
Submitted by James on Tue, 07/20/2010 - 7:55amDear members of Congress from North Carolina,
Is this what you all have in mind when you talk about accountability in government? It looks like business as usual for Republicans, but then again, Republicans aren't supposed to be in charge.
Pretty disgusting if you ask me.
What started as a temporary fix in response to the terrorist attacks has turned into a dependency that calls into question whether the federal workforce includes too many people obligated to shareholders rather than the public interest -- and whether the government is still in control of its most sensitive activities. In interviews last week, both Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and CIA Director Leon Panetta said they agreed with such concerns.

It's time for a war tax
Submitted by James on Mon, 11/23/2009 - 11:29amWith so many Republican chickenhawks wanting to pour more money into the black hole of Afghanistan, Congressman David Obey of Wisconsin has taken a powerful and smart position on the matter:
[He] made it clear that he is absolutely opposed to sending any more U.S. troops to Afghanistan and says if Obama decides to do that, he'll demand a new tax -- what he calls a "war surtax" -- to pay for it.

You got a problem with mercenaries? Get over it.
Submitted by James on Sun, 05/18/2008 - 1:53pmJoseph Neff at the News and Observer has a great round-up story on the trials, tribulations and triumphs of Erik Prince, dark lord over all things Blackwater. Mr. Prince, as you know, is the top dog among mercenary mongrels here in the states. I hope you'll go read the article and learn how the Democratic Congress is continuing to pour money into Prince's pockets.

Stopping Darfur Genocide: Miller and Butterfield Speak
Submitted by Blue South on Sat, 04/14/2007 - 4:56pm"Genocide can occur anywhere. It is not an African phenomenon. We must have global vigilance. And never again must we be shy in the face of the evidence" -Bill Clinton in 1998
Amongst all the recent concern over the emerging Genocide in Darfur was a trip to the region led by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
This trip included 11 Congressmen, including members of the CBC, who have been leading on the issue, and the ranking Republican from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Among these Congressmen were both GK Butterfield and Brad Miller.
In addition to actually visiting Darfur, the group met with leaders in Greece, Germany and Egypt to try and move international pressure along.
