Action Alert: Call Congress and tell them to end tax breaks for the top 2 percent

Please call or write your representative today about Bush tax cuts. Below the fold is an explanation cross-posted today from the Progressive Pulse.

Shuler reportedly giving serious thought to running for governor

WLOS in Asheville reports that Heath Shuler is taking a very long look at the governor's race, and is apparently leaning pretty strongly toward getting in.

Good news: he'd probably clear the field if he ran. Bad news--unless the congressional map gets thrown out, this makes NC-11 a very, very tough hold. For those who don't know, under the Ruchomander NC-11 is the most Republican district in the entire state.

Shuler to be UT Athletic Director?

Politico is that Heath Shuler is exploring the AD post at his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. Not sure yet what to make of this.

Asheville to be redrawn out of NC-11?

It seems the GOP is reconsidering redrawing the NC-11th to exclude Asheville, according to this report in the AC-T.

Health Shuler: Waaaaa, waaaaa, waaaaa

Hey, Heath. Did you ever stop to think there's a good reason mainstream Democrats are ignoring you and your whining? Maybe it's because you're irrelevant and full of crap.

Heath Shuler says he packing a gun now

In response to the Arizona shooting rampage, NC Congressman Heath Shuler has confirmed that he will carry a gun himself for protection at state public events.

“I, like many of my constituents and staff in Western North Carolina, strongly support the Second Amendment and do exercise our right to legally and safely carry a firearm,” Shuler (Democrat-Waynesville) said in a statement to the Times-News.

Shuler was first quoted by Politico on Monday as saying he would be armed for future events.

"You never think something like this will happen, but then it does," Shuler said. "After the elections, I let my guard down. Now I know I need to have (my gun) on me. We're going to need to do a much better job of with security at these events."

Shuler arming up for district events

Only Health Shuler could come up with a response this idiotic. Just what we need, more guns at political events.

Shuler, who received a serious death threat in 2009, says he is planning to carry his weapon more often and boost security at his district events. He’s even encouraging his staffers to get their own conceal to carry permits. “You never think something like this will happen, but then it does,” Shuler said “After the elections, I let my guard down. Now I know I need to have [my gun] on me. We’re going to need to do a much better job of with security at these events.”

Heath Shuler loses race for Minority Leader

Nancy Pelosi has won election to the top post in Democratic leadership in the House. She will serve as Minority Leader, defeating Blue Dog, Heath Shuler by a healthy margin. The final vote was 150-43.

From The Hill
:

Pelosi supporters were wondering why the two-term Shuler — who voted against many of the Democrats' top legislative priorities, including healthcare reform — was qualified for the position.

"The accomplishments of the last two years have been achieved without Heath's vote," Rep. James Moran (D-Va.) told reporters. "And now he wants to be leader?"

Democrats will have to continue winning in districts where voters elect more moderate or conservative candidates to regain a majority in the House. It was accomplished with Nancy Pelosi at the helm once and it can happen again.

Decimated Blue Dogs want to push Pelosi out

Heath Shuler offers his ring for kissing planting himself squarely in opposition to Nancy Pelosi in a run for Minority Leader in the House. My friend, Larry Kissell, also opposes Pelosi despite the fact it was her leadership that played at least a small role in ushering him into office in 2008. Blue Dogs lost well over half of their members yet for some reason - possibly arrogance - they think they can lead the party forward. I have one thing to say to that.

Heh

PS...I'm delighted that both Heath Shuler and Larry Kissell will be returning to Washington. They mirror their districts and must be doing a good job or they would not have won reelection in this climate.

Time to huddle

Good Morning, BlueNC. It's been ages since I voyaged onto this front page, and I want you to know I've missed you! The following was posted at Scrutiny Hooligans earlier today, and I'm posting it here as well because I would like to broaden this conversation to include everyone who cares about progressive politics in North Carolina.
