Insurance Commissioner Jim Long Kicks Off 2008 Re-election Campaign

Insurance Commissioner Jim Long kicked off his 2008 re-election campaign last night at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham. ... It has become tradition for Long to jumpstart his re-election at the ANNUAL SALUTE TO JIM LONG.

Treasurer trove redux

It's official. Michael Weisel has joined the chase to fill the job Richard Moore will be leaving.

Raleigh attorney Michael Weisel has added his name to the growing list of candidates to succeed Richard Moore as state treasurer. Weisel announced his campaign for the Democratic nomination over the weekend. If elected, Weisel said, he would retain the state’s top credit rating while protecting the $75 billion government employee pension funds and promote financial literacy among children.

Treasurer trove

The race to replace Richard Moore as NC Treasurer in 2008 will be a wild one. At least three Dems who will be running (Janet Cowell, Michael Weisel and Chris Mintz), plus Bill Daughtridge and Dale Fowell from the party of greed.

I don't have a preferred Democratic candidate for this position yet, but I do have a preferred philosophy: the power of State Treasurer should not be in the hands of someone looking for higher office. It should not, in other words, be a stepping stone to somewhere else.

Something in the Senate water?

I've been puzzled by the antics of Tony Rand lately, a once-decent progressive who seems to have drunk some dark-side kool-aid. And now there's Janet Cowell (whom I've supported in the past) going off the deep end.

According to the Dome blog she's in favor of cutting the taxes on rich North Carolinians - and also likes the $1.2 billion in Certificates of Participation funding pushed through the Senate to build more buildings in the UNC system. Maybe I'm losing it, but it's hard to understand where Cowell is coming from. Very hard.

From where I sit, the North Carolina Senate pretty much sucks.

State Treasurer

According to Under the Dome today, State Senator Janet Cowell is contemplating a run for state treasurer. All I have to say is, "Yes Please."

Cowell is in her second term in the Senate after serving four years on the Raleigh City Council.

She has a background in financial services, including a stint at a venture capital outfit in Durham. She has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Feel free to turn this into an open thread (no other was posted).
