Biden in Hillsborough

Via email

Hillsborough, NC.

Vice President Biden's motorcade arrived at Hillsborough Fire Department at 4:12pm, where some firefighters and their families were waiting for the VP standing alongside a fire truck.

VPOTUS, making an unscheduled stop, entered the firehouse at 4:21 wearing a blue and white striped shirt (sleeves rolled) and dress slacks, no jacket or tie.

He spent a few minutes greeting the families.

"No dates till you're 30," the VP told one young girl.

After talking to a woman for a few moments, the VP announced, "I just found out we're related... If I got the choice of being related to one of you, this is the one I would pick."

He continued down the line of people in the firehouse, "Hey Jimmy," he said to one firefighter. "Hey Charles" to another.

VPOTUS then stopped to chat with a young girl, who introduced her cousin and her brother.

My report from Joe Biden's time in Chapel Hill

As y'all know, our Vice President was at the Carolina Inn last night.

Last night, I went to the DNC fundraiser at the Carolina Inn featuring our titular politician, so I'm bringing you the full report. I'm happy to return with some positive news: Joe Biden is doing a great job as Vice President of the United States.

Exactly 23 months ago today Joe Biden was announced as the veep nominee. On Kos, I made this prediction in a diary:

Kissell gets some fundraising help from VPOTUS

Last night Larry Kissell got a little help raising money for his 2010 bid from Vice President Joe Biden. The fundraiser was held in the historic Cleveland Park home of Susie and William Taylor.

There were around 60 people in attendance including Charlotte Democrat Mel Watt, NC-12. Rep. Watt has been a supporter of Rep. Kissell since 2006 when Kissell narrowly lost to Robin Hayes. That year he hosted an event featuring Rep. Artur Davis in Charlotte. At the time both men were lobbying the DCCC to take notice of Kissell's upstart grassroots campaign.

When Larry introduced Vice President Biden, he said:

“There’s something magical about someone from a textiles background, and who was teaching high school civics a year ago, to be standing up here with the vice president. That’s a miracle. That’s what makes this country great.”

237 Service members sworn in as U.S. citizens in Iraq

Thanks to the pool reporter traveling with Vice President Biden we have a more colorful, emotional accounting of the swearing in ceremony of 237 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who became citizens of the United States on the 4th of July while stationed in Iraq. While most of these men and women were from Mexico and the Phillipines, there were 12 Iraqis who joined our ranks as citizens.

The ceremony was the largest naturalization ceremony held in Iraq and was held in the rotunda of the Aw Faw Palace, one of Saddam's more luxurious palaces. Soldiers looked down from three balconies to view the ceremony. The chandelier that provided the lighting for the service was described as a sight to behold with a giant sparkling centerpiece surrounded by 16 smaller chandeliers dangling from an ornate painted ceiling.

Soldiers dressed in camouflage sat on folding chairs in the center of the room with their weapons stored beneath their chairs. They were encircled by six black columns possibly of marble, granite or onyx.

VP Joe Biden will deliver commencement address at Wake Forest

Via a press release from the White House:

Vice President Joe Biden to Deliver Spring 2009 Commencement Addresses

Vice President Joe Biden will serve as commencement speaker at Syracuse University, Wake Forest University, and the United States Air Force Academy this year. Vice President Biden will address graduates, family members, and faculty at Syracuse University on Sunday, May 10, 2009, Wake Forest University on Monday, May 18, 2009, and the United States Air Force Academy on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.

I wonder whether they will give him an honorary degree or whether they will go the route of ASU?

Vice President Biden's Remarks from stop in Faison, NC

REMARKS BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

ON HOW THE RECOVERY ACT IS HELPING RURAL AMERICA

Goshen Medical Center

Faison, North Carolina

12:35 P.M. EDT

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. The Secretary of Agriculture and I have been friends, as you could probably tell, since the '80s. Tom was one of the finest governors in the United States of America. He, literally, has probably forgotten more about rural America than most people know. As the governor of Iowa -- and the commitment he made to economic development to these clinics in his own state -- all that he did before he was willing to come on and be the Secretary of Agriculture.

So I am not being solicitous when I say the President and I are incredibly fortunate to have someone who, quite frankly, knows even more about this than both the President and I know. And that's what you try to do, hire on people who really know what they're talking about.

Electoral College Meets Today

The time has finally come today, ladies and gentlemen.

Today at noon, at the historic Capitol in Raleigh, North Carolina's 15 Democratic electors will meet to formally cast our state's votes for president and vice president. I encourage everyone to come, either in person or virtually. If you can't make it to the Capitol, there will be televised proceedings at the Museum of Natural Science. For those who aren't near the area at noon, you can view the proceedings on the Secretary of State's website. I believe there is also a reception at 2pm at the Party HQ.
