Journalism and the Constitution

(Betsy) musings on the crappy job a couple of reporters are doing

This kind of hit job happens almost everyday ... and we need to call them out every time it happens. Kudos to Democratic Muse for digging into the details.

Is a journalism degree worth the parchment paper?

"For a while now, experts have classified the journalism major as the one of the more useless college majors in the nation. Last year, online slide shows from national publications ranked journalism high among the worst majors for graduating college seniors.

Is journalism a worthless major in Arkansas?

Indeed, better college writers in Arkansas universities go on and find writing careers in the newspaper industry after graduation. There are more than sixty newspapers in the state which leaves plenty of options for writers seeking real world journalism writing experience. But do college reared writers have an edge over experienced writers and reporters?

My first column for the N&O/Durham News drops tomorrow

I think this is kind of big news...I haven't been able to confirm this, but I might be the first out lesbian columnist for the News & Observer. I might be the first out lesbian columnist for a major newspaper in NC; I have no idea. Anyway, my column will appear in The Durham News, its Bull City community edition. It's a monthly column (I rotate with other local folks), a gig for six months.

Mark Schultz, the editor of TDN and The Chapel Hill News (as well as one of the Western Triangle editors for The News & Observer) just asked me out of the blue to do this. I was recommended by one of my old pals and former neighbor in Old West Durham, John Schelp, since I'm a Durham native. It's a small world.

Bad Move NCSU

Apparently North Carolina State has decided to only allow accredited journalists to have credentials to certain events on campus. It might be time to find out what the policies are at other universities/colleges.

We have folks here who are just as professional and work just as hard as those in the corporate media. I understand not opening credentials up to just anyone with a blog, but there are more than a handful of bloggers in this state who could have and would have provided professional coverage of this speech.

Doug Clark: Politics Trumps Morality

One could write volumes about the sad state of modern journalism. The collapse of quality and integrity are nothing short of mind-boggling. The collusion of reporters with right wing sources. The gushy pandering of small town newspapers to their hometown favorites. The wholesale swallowing of manufactured opinions by by once great newspapers.

But even against those sorry standards, Doug Clark at the Greensboro News-Record reaches a new low today in a comment he makes about the immigration issue.

Politics trumps whatever your idea of morality is on this issue, and many other issues for that matter.

Journalism has just changed forever

The YouTube/CNN debate was the best ever.

It put to rest forever the claim that we need professional journalists to conduct presidential debates.
